I've been doing on-line auctions for a few
years (Yahoo and Bidville). I just signed
up to try ebay out, and I'd like to use
buy it now, but need a feedback rating of
10 or to sign up with id verify (costs $5).
I'm torn... Can anyone share their
experiences, positive or negative with this
additional service? Thanks in advance!

I am ID verified on Ebay. It is worth $5 if it allows you to do BIN. I went through it and it is very easy. They do ask for your driver's license. I also think it helps when you are a newbie. From one newbie to another. Good Luck

Sell some stuff first and get the 10 feedbacks. If you are in a hurry run 3 day auctions. You will have the 10 feedbacks in a week or so and you can try it then. Save the $5.00

You can't list any auctions until you are ID verified, unless you have 10 feedback. You could buy several items just to get feedback, but that would cost you more than paying the 5 dollars to become id verified. A note: They do have a space for your SSN, but you don't have to fill it in, just your DL #. I just got a few ladies signed up on eBay and they all had to go through this to get started selling.

Well you have to give ebay your credit card and bank info to sell you can get around the credit card by paying to verify but to use Buy it now you have to apply for billpoint and will need to give your bank info to them so why not just verify with your credit card or debit card.

Its now Ebay rule anyone who uses buy it now must be set up to offer instant payment for the bin..

You CAN sell without being I.D. Verified.
(you can have regular auctions - not Dutch or some of the special features etc.) until you receive the required number of positive feedback.

Personally, I don't see where I.D. Verify has any value... especially for buyers checking out the sellers. If you read the fine print regarding I.D. Verify, they even state that it does not guarantee the identity of the person being verified.... so WHY pay the $5.00 (just because eBay encourages it by limiting certain features... so that folks feel like they "should" pay the $5.00 and become I.D. Verified?) and as a buyer, I don't see where it does anything but provide a FALSE sense of security... because if the I.D. Verified Icon does NOT mean that the IDENTITY of the person sporting the the icon is not GUARANTEED to be that person... what's it worth? NOTHIN'.

BUYERS are best protected by READING THE DESCRIPTIONS of the auctions they are interested in thoroughly.. and then VIEWING the FEEDBACK of the seller they are considering trading with... and READING the comments placed in their file by others they've traded with recently AND perhaps viewing the comments that seller has left for others.

I.D. Verify does NOTHING for buyers and sellers (as far as I can tell).

dman -instant payment for Buy it Now?

You mean Billpoint only, and not PayPal?

I've had people right and left use the Buy it Now on mine, and then take 2-3 weeks to send a check, which made me wonder, why did they hit the BIN on it........

edited to add: Do they do a full credit check with the ID verify? I understand its thru Equifax. If someone had not so hot credit, do you get turned down?

Well Right now instant purchase is still a feature you coose but I think in the near future its all going to be instant purchase.

But all new users do have to apply for billpoint when they apply to be a seller many people on other boards have been Questioning this and some complaining because you have to give billpoint checking account info to sell on ebay ..

I just signed up and I can tell you that I
did not have to sign up for Billpoint. In
fact, I probably wouldn't have signed up if
I would have had to get that too. I know
some people have problems with PayPal, but
in 13 or so months, I've had none. On the
other hand, while I haven't used BP, I've
heard the fees are high and that many people
have had problems with them. And what is up
with charging people to transfer their own
money from their BP account to their bank!?!
That is really hitting below the belt (so
to speak).

Anyway, I really want to use the BIN feature
(while its still free), but $5 for ID verify
that doesn't guarantee my identity for the
seller? And getting 10 feedback won't take
that long, but it will take time (not to
mention that on both Yahoo and Bidville my
first feedback came from a non-paying bidder
and were both negative/unfair). If I go 3
for 3 with ebay, then it could take longer...

Thanks for the opinions, I'm mulling it over.

Just buy some inexpensive jewelery, you could rack up some good feedback quick that way. Or bid on mine everything always starts at 1 cent ONLY KIDDING! (this is not my name on ebay I am not soliciting bids here LOL!)

I think something like the jewelery thing is the way to go..

For the few who wondered...

I still think it is stupid to have to pay for
such a thing, but my desire to sell via Buy
It Now outweighed my need for the $5 and my
previously mentioned feelings on the subject,
so I signed up for ID Verify. Thank you
again for all your comments!

FINAL UPDATE:

Well, the move paid off. Less than 2 hours
after I signed up for ID Verify and changed
my auctions to Buy It Now, I sold an item
(my first on eBay)!

I listed a video game cartridge at $4, with
a BIN of $14 (Funcoland sells the same game
for $18). I even made a nice profit. :^)

Without ID Verify, I'd have had to wait for
weeks to get a 10 feedback to use BIN...

We'll see if I continue to use it once they
start charging for BIN (only a matter of time).

You CAN sell without being I.D. Verified

How?

I am a Canadian. I, therefore, cannot be verified.

I don't own a credit card.

Therefore, I CANNOT SELL on eBay!

I can sure buy a lot though. eBay obviously cares way more about their sellers than their buyers. Without buyers, there would be no sellers.

Go figure this idiot logic:

To sell (i.e. receive money), you have to prove that you have credit

To buy (i.e. spend money), you don't have to prove anything

The ID Verify program is an easy and inexpensive way to provide comfort to potential customers who are considering bidding in your auctions. We have it and I think it does some good, especially for skeptical buyers.

But it's just another example of eBay's refusal to recognize that they are supposed to be "interantional". Verification is available for US residents only.

Total farce if you ask me

RB:

The available verification technology is what limits this to the United States only. It has nothing at all to do with eBay.

It does have everything to do with eBay if that's how they chose to "verify" their members. It excludes the vast majority of the world's potential sellers. Surely there must be a better way to do this.

Final FINAL UPDATE: :^)

Shortly after the first sale, I sold an
item listed at $9.99 for $20.00 BIN (less
than 45 minutes after I had added BIN to
that auction). Previous sales of item on
eBay by others went about the same amount,
and a previous sale I had for the same item
on Yahoo went for $17 or so (been awhile).
Nice profit on this item as well...

I'm sorry that those outside the U.S. can't
use ID Verify to get BIN, but it has worked
for me.
