Just received our American Express bill to find that we used the ebay service to the tune of $2,400.00 last month. A new record for us. This is a good amount of money and it's easy to see why eBay is doing so well, when a guy like me is sending them monthly funds equal to the size of his home mortgate.

From where I come from, you're doing pretty well if your home mortgage is $2,400 per month!!!
YOWZA!

HOLY COW!!
$2,400 a month house payment?
It takes us 2 months just to earn that.
Our house payment is $125.00.
No I don't want to trade!

OMG, house payments around here for that much, you would be living in a mansion, we pay $320 for a nice four bedroom/ 2 bath, and we bought a riding lawn mower this year.

Here in Denver house payments are around 2K-3K and that is NOT a mansion.
My house payment may be the same BUT my ebay fees are no where near that. I best get to work and get them hire!
* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Auctions are all about 2 people wanting 1 item. The trick is having it listed when the 2 bidders are looking.

You've got to either be kidding, or possibly living WAY ABOVE your means! Do you actually pay ebay that much per month along with that humungous (sp?) house payment? I would NEVER and I mean NEVER want a mortage that high. We live comfortably and ours is $1,200 a month - payable in 15 years at 6.675%. Can't beat that!
And....I only pay ebay @ $25-35 a month!
You must be a powerseller supreme! Hope it keeps up for ya.

My ebay bill was zero. They credited the whole amount simply out of kindness.

I agree with Microbes. Perhaps you would prefer paying rent for a B&M establishment?
eBay fees are chump change in comparison.
BTW - What was your gross sales last month?

My comment was meant more to address the size of my eBay bill, not my mortgage, so please do not take my original post as a bragging message. It was just to outline how eBay is doing very well by us sellers these days.
By the way, for those who commented, housing is very expensive in the suburbs of Chicago and eBay is only a side business for us. We have a push mower, with no auto propelltion and I have to cross my fingers that it starts every Saturday morning.

$2400 eBay payment isn't too bad if you did $14,000 or more in sales, and hopefuly a good profit margin on your items after deducting eBay fees.

Whoever it is that pays $125 and $320 a month for their home, what general area do you live?? Because that sounds good to me!
Our house payment is over $1500, and no, its a normal 3bed 2 bath (plus additions, we did ourselves)

It was a very good month, despite the ebay fees, as they were relative to our listings and sales. Nonetheless, it is still a great deal of money going to an online service. Don't you think? This is what makes eBay such a great business.

COMPUTERBOY: My guess is that you're most likely in Lake Forest. I'm from Brookfield (2 blocks from the zoo and sometimes you can actually hear the lions roar!!) and I can only imagine what your taxes are.
Good to hear your sales are up there!

Nicepolice:
We're in Naperville and visit the zoo several times a year. An old college pal of mine works with the dolphins in the show. It must be fun to live near the park. You also have that great seafood restaurant nearby.
By the way, a Lake Forest home would be in the $4,000.00-$5,000.00 range per month, unless you put about a half million down on your home.
Best regards.

I live in the middle of IOWA in a little hick town with our own PO where I'm PMR. There is a Bar/Resturant and a small grocery store with 2 gas pumps.
We have a 3 bedroom home with 1 bath and basement. A 4 car shed(3/4 full of eBay stuff) on 4 acres of land. A HUGE garden out back!
ZERO CRIME RATE!
We have a good peaceful life here

$125!!!!
Dang, I was having to pay more than that for an apartment in college (many moons ago!).
Now before everyone starts getting their panties in an uproar, remember that people have different length mortgages which can really impact those monthly payments. And some may have made bigger downpayments.
Higher mortgages don't necessarily mean higher home price. Unfortunately, we moved from a paid off house to a 10 acre mini-farm w/a monster mortgage. I'll be ebaying from the grave.
And I have TWO mowers! A nice size John Deere tractor and a smaller John Deere garden tractor. When I'm not ebaying, I'm mowing.

We have a riding mower but hubby prefers to push. Guess he wants the exercise.
I don't mow, so it makes no difference to me.
We also have a BIG tractor, because he puts our acres up in hay.
We also have,
3 cars, 2 trucks ~ 2 cats and 1 dog!
My eBay bill runs from $25 to $100 a month. It depends on how ambitious I am.

I remember paying $150 a month for a rental house, and shared with roomates in 1978, and we thought that was high!
I think I might like the midwest
(but its so far from either ocean! )

well, just to put my 2cents in.
my ebay bill (when I'm selling, which I haven't been for the past month) is usually between $25-40, depending on how ambitious I am and how high my items end at. I'm not large volume.
Our house payment is under $800 (30 years, but pay extra every month and every December), taxes under $1200/year. About 1200 sq. feet plus a finished basement. We're about 2 blocks from Lake Michigan in a tourist-town, too. I was amazed at how low our taxes were, compared to other areas in my city.
You can't get anything "decent" here for under $90,000. And even that is pushing it. To get an average 3 bedroom on a regular lot with a 2-stall garage, would probably be around $130K or more nowadays. The ritzier homes in little Association subdivisions are closer to the $200-300K range. Waterfront on our inland lake or Lake MI jumps you up to the half mil range or higher.

My ebay bill never runs over $100. That is all I can handle.
Unfortunately my BARN payment is higher than my house payment! I just built a nice new MD Barn a few years ago and it costs as much as my house!
I just Ebay to support my horse habit! Seems they always need something: hay, feed, new tack, the vet, the blacksmith. Worse than children!

Yeeeeouch!
$2,400 is a little more than our whole YEARS ebay costs!
We average around $150.00 or so per month.
Also from Chicagos western suburbs, we have a rider and push mower!
Oh yea, 3 dogs and a boat also.
(that's were 90% of our ebay profit goes!)

Highest Ebay bill ever was $200... I'm cutting way back using the Storefronts (even though not getting sales through it, its cutting back listing fees). I'm hoping to keep it under $30 a month until Harry Potter cards come in.. 8) Hopefully will be listing lots of those and getting sales.

This is a hobby for us as we also have real world jobs.
I about fell over last month when the bill was $562!! Of course, taking the checks to the bank wasn't a problem. I knew we had a great month but when you see such high fees - wow.
HOWEVER,
Having a hobby that does 48% in net profits is a nice hobby indeed. We looked into a B&M and after all expenses the profit would have only been around 25% - too low for the work. I know most businesses want 30% net profit and are satisfied - but we got spoiled on ebay and cannot justify doing less than 45%-%50%.
BTW -
Moving from No Seattle where we lease a 3 bedroom home, no garage for $1250. Moving back to Long Beach/Seal Beach, California where we will buy. Our mortgage will be around $1700 for a 3 bedroom starter we intend to add and fix up.
Love your idea Packer - that has always been my dream.
