Closed our on-street shop at the end of last year. Have boxes, and boxes, and boxes of Price Guides. Spent a fortune on them over the years. Seems like they're not worth squat now (thank you eBay). Is there any kind of market anywhere out there, or do all us old-timers just use the books for fireplace kindling?

I do not buy the books for the price guide because you know they change from time to time. I buy them to look through. If you know what you would like to get for them put them on a BIN and see what happens.Good Luck

I agree w/ Libra63 - I enjoy looking through them. They also come in handy if you have an estate sale or live auction to go to { for reference. }
Some are even collectable in their own right - I just saw a Overstreet Comic Book guide 3rd Ed. w/ a $50 bid on it { on Ebay. }
I would research closed auctions and sell some individually and put others in lots.

Libra - Yep. One of the reasons we have so many is that I was buying them as much for identification purposes as for prices. It takes (or used to, anyway) so many books to be able to cover an eclectic range of merchandise. Now, they're just consuming space. Certain ones I'll keep because they cover items I'm personally interested in, but the ones that I had just to handle merch that came in from consigners, or merch I saw at auction and wanted to research . . . well, sure hope they find a good home. Maybe I'll try one of the other "venues." Prices on eBay are verrrry depressing because they're sooooo depressed

Heck yeah, sell 'em on ebay to get the best return on your investment! I have stacks of them, but I don't use them for prices. I use them moreso for identification. They're also useful in helping you come up with keywords that will get more hits on your auctions by the collecting communities you want to reach. A lot of collectors use the outdated ones so they can track the relative values of collectibles over the years. Besides, while ebay has tended to drive down the prices of the more common collectibles, the genuinely hard to find ones have gone up in value - those are the ones that I want to be able to recognize when I come across them, and price guides are very useful for this.

Box lots of old price guides do real well at local live auctions here in New England.
"Certain ones I'll keep because they cover items I'm personally interested in, "
Which is why others will bid on them.

Well, I must be dreaming nightmares when I look at the "completed" in the Price Guide category of books, because I'm seeing, in general, that they go for a pittance or don't even get bids at $3.99. I guess I'd better take a closer look, because y'all see a much better market! Thanks for the encouragement. Most of our guides are hard-bound, nice books, and $3.99 just doesn't cut it since we paid full wholesale price for them. I'll make a list, check it out, and contact those of you who requested it (this is going to take a few days!).
Thanks!

If you sell to The World, then the Price Guides cease to exist. Your lot is only worth what other eBayers in The World are prepared to pay.
This is not my trading name.

me too! I love priceguides. eBay has been wonderful for real life prices, but there is nothing better than sitting down in a comfy chair with a stack of reference books and digging in! Add me to the list.

Sell those price guides in the category they represent. A depression glass guide in the depression glass category, a McCoy in the McCoy category etc. If I have a piece of something I need to I.D. I don't check ebay first I go to my books. They are much faster. I've also learned more from them than I'll ever learn browsing ebay.
You can't take your computer with you when you're buying so I always keep a few books in my car. They've paid for themselves many times over.
I've also bought a few price guides on ebay. The last one I bought was a BIN auction because I wanted it now!

I think the older ones would sell if they are unique in some way. If they are the 7th edition and the 15th is for sale, new, on ebay, I would expect the low dollar amount. I sell ex-library price guides which are the previous edition to whatever new edition was received. If most of your's are simply "stale"...you could donate them to your local library for their booksale and take the tax deduction for charity!

Islander, forget the Price Guide catagory! Search for price guides under the subject instead. You have to put it in where the potentially interested buyer will see it!
