I have a 1982 BCE edition of Joyce Verrette's Sweet Wild Wind (book). There's no libray of congress or isbn number anywhere.
And I've searched the internet (Bookfinder, Half.com, etc.) and cannot locate a hardback copy (and only a very few paperbacks). I thought perhaps I could get the ISBN from another HB listing but no.
Is there any other way to get an ISBN number, any site I could go to?
I thought there might be a way, too, to list on half.com by just putting in the title and author (did it once but don't know how I did it!). . . .
Thanks in advance.

ISBN = International Standard Book Number, assigned upon application to RR Bowker, no charge. The number allows bookstores etc to quickly identify and order a book.
LCCN = Library of Congress number, assigned upon application to the Library of Congress, only charge is a deposit of two copies of the book. Note that the date (initial two digits = year) of this number does not necessarily mean the book was published that year, it might be later.

Kolonel22: Thanks. I went to abe. and they had just a few copies, intermixed with "near misses." None of the listings included an ISBN number, so I emailed one of the sellers of a hardback and asked what the ISBN # is. He can't find it, either!

Amazon lists this title as ISBN #0440176344. It doesn't indicate whether it is a hard or soft cover, but there are sellers listing hardcover copies of it under that ISBN.

Eternally--Thanks for the help. I went straight to Amazon, but the number they're giving for HB copy of this book is different. And the number doesn't work (of course) with half.com (I'm not selling on Amazon right now). It actually isn't an ISBN, it's their own internal accounting number. When I tried it on Half.com, I got an error message.
And Amazon only has about 2 or 3 copies of this book, and all the rest ar "near misses."
I think I'll give up and just sell it in ebay with a BIN. I am grateful to everyone who's tried to help me with this. Sometimes things just don't seem to be fixable.

Is this the number you are looking for?
I got it from the Barnes and Noble out of print section. I usually go there for checking book prices.
ISBN:0-440-17634-4 Condition:B Gently used paperback.
Format: Paperback

You're welcome roadsmith. The number I gave you is not Amazon's internal accounting number, however, it IS the ISBN number that Amazon lists for this title. That's how Amazon lists ISBN numbers...as "ASIN". It's the same number that Libra63 came up with. At any rate, best of luck!

i have been told several years ago applying for an ISBN number is costly and so some individuals do not get one for the book they have written and the disadvantage is that big bookstores such as barnes and noble etc wont sell them?
has it changed?i assume this book writer has looked into it.

Aaaaaack. This is tiring!
Libra63: Thank you for the tip on Barnes and Noble. I'd never looked at them before.
The ISBN number you all are giving me is for the paperback version, not the hard cover.
So. . . I went to Barnes and Noble, went to the Out of Print section, searched for Sweet Wild Wind and there are quite a few hardcover copies of it for sale. BUT where did you find the ISBN number??? I clicked on several of those copies and it wasn't listed anywhere. Is there something I'm just not seeing there?
I guess my problem is that I don't want to list this book as a paperback when it isn't. Should I just quit for now?

roadsmith,
I think the clue as to why you can't find an ISBN for your book is because you correctly identified it as a BCE (Book Club Edition) in your first post.
Here's a fairly decent place to read up about First Editions, Book Club editions, & ISBNs.

Hope this helps.

"i have been told several years ago applying for an ISBN number is costly ..."
You were told wrong.
But some self-publishers don't bother with it.
