Hello All, I just got back from taking the summer off at ebay and have come across a problem. I store my pics on an offsite webpage server and have been doing it for the last few years.

When I went to post some items, I noticed that my pics dont show up anymore. I checked the html and it is alright and if I paste the img src location in a browser's address bar the pics show up just fine.

My question is....Does anyone know if ebay has found a way from preventing us from using img src html tags for our pic hosting and if they have, is there a way to get around it?

Does anyone know of a good free way to store pics and have them show up in our listings?

Thanks in advance - chris

PS- I forgot to state that I use ebud's eposter and that I went and looked up listings from the begining of summer and the ads that had pics on two different servers are not showing up. the pics that were stored on a third server ARE showing up but I cant use that server anymore as they are shutting down...sigh [ edited by chrisvnh on Sep 6, 2001 04:50 PM ]

You can still use <img src="yourserver.com/yourpic.jpg">

BUT lots of "Free" websites are blocking "hotlinking". Tripod, Anglefire, etc no longer allow it.

My pictures are stored on my ISP space and they are showing up just fine. Have you tried posting one of the pictures in question here to see if it shows up?

The problem with "Free" picture hosting is that they can change the rules anytime they want. When Tripod killed "hot linking" there was red x's all over eBay. I broke down and paid for webspace, and read the TOU of my new server very carefully, and they specificly said they could be used for "hot linking" and was ideal for ebay picture hosting.

The only draw back to the server I use now is bandwidth limits. I sometimes use links to video clips to show my merchandise working and it eats bandwidth big time. I havn't gone over the limit yet (in the last 4 months) but I got close one month.

Microbes - is it just webspace that u are paying for or is it a whole server pkg.? I may have to "break down" too and am on the market. Can u point me in the direction of your server?

Hey, i cant complain I got a few years out of the free servers and ran thousand upon thousands of pics through them.

I think that most of us ebayers started on such a shoestring that now we balk at having to pay for things that used to be free

Good lord almighty...i cant even think of what i would do if i didnt have the pleasure of paying for posting and auction mngmnt.

Hi Chrisvnh, starting out on the internet, AW was a life saver with their pic hosting options. Then they started to charge, so moved to another site and then this host started to charge after so many pics and then I put my act together and use my ISP and my noodle to host my own pics! Hey--if I can do it--you can too!!

I am so helplessly computer illiterate--it is shameful. But hope springs eternal

most low and mid cost webhosting packages or just web space will run you about the same price Roughly $9.99 to $15.00 monthly.

Keep in mind though that bandwidth is limited so the host may cost more if you run hundreds of auctions with many views the charges for the extra bandwidth can add up fast month after month..

if you are a large seller who uses many pictures per auction the cost of useing a service like AW or other is well worth what they charge.

for them people who are a bit more talented and if you have DSL or cable internet connection you can host your auction photos from your own computer with your ICQ program

I use 50megs.com

I use it for "space", but they have lots of features that I don't use. Email accounts, cgi-bin access, FTP support, frontdoor support, etc. They will host your domain if you have one.

I've thought of this, but what are the security problems? You are basicly giving people (limited) access to your computer. Wouldn't it make you a target for hackers?

I use baypal & it costs 5.00 a month. I tried to use my USP which is AOL, but just never could learn how to do it.

Yeah, anyone with a static IP address can be a hacker/cracker target and most DSL and cable modem users with always-on service are in this group.

There is a lot of good firewall software (or hardware, depending on application) out there to protect our little way stations on the Net....most cost a little money (or more) but the protection is worth it IMO...

I'm still on ISDN so I have a dynamic IP even though I'm online most of the time. And, since my gateway is through a LAN modem/router and Airport network running DHCP, I get another, albeit small, layer of security...

If I had a static IP and a firewall in place, I wouldn't think twice about converting one of my old Macs into a web server...

Then there's those pesky California blackouts..*G*

I use Road Runner, and the IP address is NOT static, it changes at bootup, or anytime I want to change it.

I run Zone Alarm, but am a firm beleiver in "Anything one programer can write, another can find a way around."

Microbes,

Very true, regarding programming...

It sounds like you have an additional layer of security with your dynamic IP....I noticed this phenomenon as well on my wife's friends DSL service from PacBell and was surprised it had to connect to a server when she booted up...sometimes it also took nearly the 3-4 seconds to do so that my ISDN line does...

I've tried running sniffer programs through some remote web sites that probe my machines looking for entrances to my file systems but, evidently, even with file sharing on, most of the tools the casual Wintel cracker uses don't work well against the Mac file system.....with DHCP on, the programs couldn't even find my machines, even though the instructions to find it came from it (the IP)

Thanks for the info on the cable modems...I didn't know that for sure, only what our local cable company told me...

Hi Chris. I am having the same problem and I use both aol and my own web site for photo storing purposes. I have noticed that this problem is increasing on ebay. I just today wrote to ebay complaining. I have at least one or two photos not showing on each auction. It has been going on for awhile now. For example, if I have 6 photos on a page, I notice that 2 or 3 won't show up. I get that white box with a red X in it. If I right click the box and click on "show picture," then it may come up (but how many people know about this or will waste time to do this even if they know...). I am annoyed though because this hasn't happened until recently. It is not aol or my other non- aol web site. It must be ebay or maybe Internet Explorer. Another thing is my photos are always clearer directly from my web addresses; on ebay, it seems ebay reduices them and they are not as clear. I am getting a bit fed up. I even accused ebay of trying to get us to use IPIX, but IPIX is the worst thing going. I have never ever seen a clear photo on IPIX.

I use 50megs.com

Someone here on these boards directed me to it.

It is very low cost per month. You have you own url, email, web page that you can do anything you want with...meaning you can sell from it without huge costs involved, or you can just use it as a homepage, your choice. And you can link your photos from there. Not like the other places that restrict that kind of thing.

I really like it. Also, it was very easy to build the web page.

There is some minor risk in setting up a webserver from your computer With a windows computer but with ICQ The server Is locked in to one Directory there is no access to the Root Directory it allows acess only to the files in one sub directory only ..

since ICQ dont offer no CGI access or anyother type access there is no HD write privillages at all from your ICQ .

and inless you set it up so that users have access to all your directories your pretty safe I have had a ICQ website in my computer with no problem nothing can be up loaded with out you knowing a box pops up asking if you want to accept incomeing files you can decline so there is little chance of getting a virus.

dman3, I think if I was going to do this, I spring for another 10 bucks a month, get a router installed, and run my pictures on a seperate machine...
