You put "NO PAYPAL" into your auction description, "NO PAYPAL" in your invoice, and what does the buyer do? Sends payment via Paypal. Are people illiterate, don't give a s&@#, or is the problem something else entirely?

AAAAAAAAAARGH!

I'm not sure... Maybe if you just stated what kinds of payments you do accept instead of including the kinds of payment you don't accept...

Sometimes I think people just see the word "PAYPAL" and miss the word "NO"...

From my usual auction terms:

Winning bidder to prepay by check or money order

Paypal payments are NOT ACCEPTABLE

Sounds cut and dried to me. I wonder if these people even know what they're bidding on if they can't read...

I don't mention any online payments by name, just put a bold notation at the bottom of my auctions that I cannot accept electronic payments. No one has attempted to use PP or other online payments in quite a while. In my EOA email, I just put a line that payments via personal check or money orders are accepted.

cougarls88, if you want to see why paypal says they can't stop people from doing this, check this thread out.

I have had the same problem and I am convinced some people bid on auctions
purposely, that say "no paypal" hoping to convince the seller to sign up and
the buyer gets their 5 dollar head hunting fee from paypal.

Yes many people are illiterate, many are also lazy, hurried...

I agree with those who recommend that you do not mention paypal if you do not accept paypal; If that bothers you then consider a non-specific statement such as "I do not accept any of the electronic payment services".
When making multiple purchases on ebay and going through the notifications to send paypal payments it is natural to simply scan for paypal and so send it because you said not to, even when one is perfectly capable of reading.
Simply respond politely with your refusal to accept such payment, instead of running a campaign against them.

I had a Canadian buyer several weeks ago that won one of my auctions. I cleary state "we do not accept PayPal for international payment". The guy wins, then sends me nasty email because PayPal won't accept his payment. My EOA confirmation restates the PayPal policy in bold, uppercase, and underlined.

In addition, it also says the s/h included in the confirmation is for US only, and if international please email with address so s/h can be revised. So he was $##@% off that a) I wouldn't accept his PayPal ("everyone else does" and b)Iwouldn't ship to Canada for the quoted US price.

I received at least 4 of the rudest and obnoxious emails from him.....before he gave me a negative!

Illiterate: excellent possibility; or arrogant - you know the ones...they are different and better than all your other buyers and should be treated as such.

Yes, in fact many of them are $@!%&*# illiterate. Consider this just another challenge in running a successfull online business, or take the easy way out.

OH THANK YOU THANK YOU!
I had a thread on this while ago,
I called them "blind"
Now my WBN says:
I do not accept Paypal,
Or personal cheques, the payments will be returned to you.

In my desc. I say that for for of payment credit cards
Payment via www.Bidpay.Com
And money orders only.

Most get it, few try and send the Paypal payment to me, and I just return back to them,
I gave up agrivation after the 4th one,
No I just take pleasure in writing them
Emails that tell them in nice words that they
Are illiterate

Not much we can do, Paypal
Will accept payment for anyone with email addy, unless we go to smoke signals we have put up with it...
I hate Paypal!!!

Here is a suggestion which may eliminate this
problem for people who DON'T WANT to take
paypal. I agree with what others have said that some buyers send paypal almost as an automatic response and may not fully read the EOA note or the TOS.

If you DON'T ever accept paypal or do very very rarely, consider this (it may not be fool proof, but it may help)

Change your Paypal e-mail address so that it is
DIFFERENT than your ebay e-mail address. Simply go into your account and make the change. Delete your ebay address from your paypal account. If a buyer automatically
sends payment to your ebay address which you have deleted from your paypal account, this should give you the option of accepting or refusing the payment. In this case, you
would refuse.

If, however, it becomes necessary under special circumstances to allow paypal
at your discretion, e-mail the buyer your
special paypal e-mail address.

BTW, I do accept paypal, but does anyone who does not accept paypal think my suggestion would work.

professorhiggins, the problem is that paypal will take a payment (and debit a card) to any email address, even if it isn't one that has an account. The money then sits in "limbo" waiting for the seller to rush right over and sign up for paypal.

We ain't buying it, PAYPAL. This tactic is unethical, and underhanded.

MICROBES..I agree 100% about the fact that paypal sends you the "you've got cash" email knowing full well i am not a member. They are simply hoping i will sign up with them to get my payment. Then i have to contact the buyer and have them cancel the payment and pay with billpoint or check or money order.

I had 2 people get mad about that and refused to pay me. "no paypal' is clearly stated in my tos and eoa. PAYPAL could stop this problem by telling their member immediatly that i am not a member but as you know they wont do it.

I have nothing against paypal but i figure one online payment service is enough to keep track of.

I have nothing against paypal

I do. When ever I get one of the "You've got cash" emails, they just threw a monkey wrench in my deal.

I plainly remember the "Always Free" crap, and I didn't beleive it then, and I was right. No way will I do business with people that LIE to build up a customer base.

My fault. I guess I thought that if payment was sent to an address that wasn't registered
that it would have the option of being declined by the person it was sent to.

A couple of questions that I'm wondering
about:

1) What happens to money that is sent to
an e-mail address that doesn't exist?
(Does it go into a paypal employees 401K plan?)

2) The seller's e-mail address is [email protected] The buyer makes a typo
and sends payment to [email protected]

Problem: [email protected] is a valid e-mail address. How long would the buyer have to cancel payment? If [email protected] decides to claim the
payment (I guess it must be an anonymous gift.....) is the buyer completely screwed?
Of course the seller would not have payment either.

Screwed by paypal.....Nah it would never happen...

It has to be reclaimed by the sender. The problem is, it is sometimes really hard to make someone understand why, when their card has been DEBITED, you havn't been paid.

I've never dealt with this, but my guess is the buyer may be in for a hard time getting their money back.
