My heart just isn't in this. I have auctions closing today that are way off pace. If this country enters into a long, dangerous war will peoples minds be on seeking out thier favoriate collectibles on ebay? I have envelopes containing payments I havent even opened because I am preoccupied with this mess. What to do?

Not meant to sound cold but perhaps you need to stop wringing your hands and get back to work. At least get your packing and shipping caught up?

On Tuesday I had 12 payments to deal with and I felt the best thing to do was to pack and send them out. Yesterday it was only 7 items I had to pack & ship. Maybe none today, but at least I'm not falling behind.

As far as people not bidding on ebay--I haven't experienced that. They are bidding and leaving feedback. It seems that some people are trying their best to go about their business.

I too have been receiving bids & feedback in the last 2 days. I haven't listed anything new since this disaster, but I plan on getting busy ASAP.
Everyone handles shock in a different manner, and some people need a break from their TV sets.

The collectors are still collecting ......

Kiawok has a great point. I was watching and listening too much yesterday and it had a very bad effect on me. Don't stop your daily activites or the terrorists have won. I am sure they got great satisfaction that everything was shut down on the 11th. Get busy with your listings and packing, you will find it helps. Lets all put flags on our listings in support of our President, Vice President and Sec. of State.

I posted 2 days ago on a FREE niche auction which we sell a great deal on, and to date NOTHING, normally we would have had “BIN” type sales on this auction.

Regarding, getting away from the tragedy, I HIGHLY recommend it. I had become depressed and obsessed and couldn't seem to do anything but watch the news reports, moving from one news channel to another. My husband finally became concerned and told me to go to some other channel that I might enjoy, and in a short time I started to pull out a bit. I literally had to force myself to dress, put on my make-up, and went to the grocery just to get out, it helped a great deal - I emotionally felt MUCH better.

I think the problem is, unlike Pear Harbor, we don't immediately have a clear cut enemy to "hate," to help form justice/retaliation against, so many are simply in limbo.

If you are caught up in this to the point of depression/obsession, try your best to go to another TV channel, and to get out of your house to some normal activity.

It you can't seem to do anything else, go to you personal doctor and see if she/he can help you.

Good suggestion insightwatcher. I've also watched tv almost continuously since it happened and had reached a point where every news break had me crying again. Yesterday I got out of the house and did some grocery shoppong and came home and tackled the laundry and I did feel like I could cope a little better. It's really almost too sad to believe.

To let these people destroy our economy and the econmy of this great country would be a bigger tradgedy. I think our counrty should prove our strength by not folding! As much as my heart is not in it, my family needs me and the country needs to move on. I think we should list anyway. IMO.

I am exhausted from just sitting and watching the various news reports and searching out new news on the Net. Yesterday my friend left for an already planned trip to the beach and left me in charge of her 3 horses, 2 dogs and 5 cats (plus my own critters). Somehow just having that extra physical work to do has helped. I believe the mental exhaustion we are experiencing is much worse than people can understand. Today on the extended CBS Morning Show they were saying that people need to start making a move toward getting back to a routine. Our hearts go out to the families but we can't let this whole county go into a tailspin as this is what these terrorists were trying to do ... bring our economy to a standstill and cripple our nation. I don't know if I have the energy to get new listings ready, but I can sure relist those that ended with no bids last week. I might even relist them and donate all those proceeds to the Red Cross effort.

I find myself in the same funk...keeping up with incoming payments but feeling almost irritated that people still want to do business.

Other than that, letting the kids play while I lie down and watch TV all day. It felt better when I got out with them to take them to the pool, and later, to go out and do some volunteer work. It will still take time before I can just sit in the office and compose new listings, though. I find myself spending most of my time reading the web.

I agree with others. Turn off the TV. It's ok to grieve and emphathize, but not 24 hours a day. Go to a news site once a day and get updates, but don't obsess over it.

Last night on CNN they had victim/family stories. Over and over and over. I sympathize with these families and I want them to get their piece said on national television, but I don't have the capacity to absorb so much pain.

With pearl harbor, you could only read about it on the newspaper. Today you can turn to any of 40 channels and hear and feel the grief of hundreds of people. At some point, maybe not today or tomorrow, but very soon, you are going to have to put this behind you and get on with your life.

One channel last night had a story of a pizza parlor in Israel that was bombed by terrorists and just reopened. Everyone there said that they try to go about their normal routine as much as possible. To give in to it is to allow these people to win. We are inexperienced in this, but in the middle east it is much more common place; the citizens of those countries should know how to handle it. I think we should do the same.

Get out and treat yourself to Starbucks Coffee or an ice cream. Look around in a store. I looked around in a linen store yesterday and getting out a bit did help.

We personally have seen a decline in business since the tragedy. This is understandable as our citizens have more important priorities at the moment.

I continue to list and will just weather throught the decline until things pick back up again. And they will...

Work helps. I ironed, packed and shipped, took pictures, listed and really threw myself into my ebay work yesterday. It helps to take your mind off of the tragedy and think about something else. Today I'm going to do the same thing and also take a long walk as the weather is beautiful here.
Walks always make me feel better and I also return to work with a renewed source of energy.

Bids are down, but I'm sure the collectors will need a break from all of this and will come back and bid, bid, bid! It doesn't hurt to be optimistic, as life goes on.

My heart and prayers go out to all of us, especially the victims of this horrible tragedy.

We did list our regular schedule (which included Tuesday), and even though I had to force myself to write descriptions on Tuesday, I'm glad now that I did. Our bids were down Tues & Wed, but I noticed today that bids were picking up again. Things are slowly getting back to more normal.

I like the idea of a Starbucks coffee... raspberry mocha chip frappacino... mmmmmmmmm, I may need a starbucks run.

I plan to list this weekend and begin to go back to business as usual but I will add this gif to all auctions. All auctions watch friends feel free to copy it if you wish.
It's an animated gif and you can view it here.

I think that posting messages of support in our auctions is a great idea, but remember folks comming back to ebay are trying to escape the reality for a few monents and do something that was normal in thier lives. A flag waving or something, but this one got to me, and I think its a little to heavey to post in our auctions. Not a put down, just my thoughts.. ED

ED--I agree. I will not be putting flag waving GIF's in my auctions. Know I support and love my country, but there is a time and place for all feelings and emotions. Personally, my business on eBay is not one place to show it. JMHO.

I finally had to turn the tube off. What is getting to me are the professionals saying get back to normal but we are still having 24 hour news. I wish they would have captions and get back to normal programing with important break-ins.

I would think that is just what terrorists like to see, be they 13 yr old boys or 33 yr old boys acting 13! They get to see the destruction they caused over and over. Apparently there are still enough of them out there to enjoy the scenes!

I am not going to list for a couple days because I can't keep my mind on anything much. Whatever I do I seem to screw up and
have to do over...probably this posting too.

I have literally been GLUED to the TV for the past 2 days.

I decided today I better start listing, when the words "BIN LADEN" went across my screen and I thought the BIN meant "buy it now".

Later I quickly glanced at the tv and saw the word FIVE [firefighters] and I thought it said FVF (final value fee).

So needless to say, I have started listing today for the first time since Tuesday. However, I still have the TV on in the other room and I am listening to everything!

yup. that sums it up for me, wbbell.

ed, and jean, i agree. originally i was going to put the flag gif in my new listings, but after having a 'reference-free' day and night yesterday, i'm thinking many people will appreciate being able to go to ebay as a form of relief. so i'm not going to. perhaps a brief, oblique reference, such as 'god bless.' something like that.

executivegirl, lol, same thing crossed my mine with 'bin.' good to see you here and know you're ok.

On the encouraging side.

Things are picking up a bit for us. It amazes me that we got any bids at all on Tuesday or Wednesday, but we did get them.

Bids on my auctions are down about 95% since the disasters happened. Also I am getting a very low response to the winning bidder notifications that I sent out these last couple of days. In spite of this I am going to start listing again tonight. My goal tonight is to list 10 auctions and to hope for the best. GOD BLESS AMERICA

We need to show them they did not WIN and return to as normal life as possible. Sure there is a war coming, but we need to keep things at home as normal as possible.

At least for our kids.

I have found that not only did bidding pick up today, but my email has been more active than just listing confirmations and end of auctions today. On Tuesday and Wednesday, email was just dead. Its good to see things pick up.

Everyone should start listing, it is the patriotic thing to do. Also, look for things to buy. You will cheer yourself as well as someone else. There are bargains out there.

And if you are still doom and gloom, have your favorite ice cream and kiss the baby.

I need to list simply because I depend on my ebay income. But its real difficult. Especially since today Friday is Natl day of Mourning. I go back & forth aboutit.
I have been getting lots of payments through BP & Paypal today & payments coming in.
All my auctions ended on 9-11 so now I really need to list if I want to have $$$ for next week
But I believe that we need to keep on going about our business bec. it'll take our mind off off all the heaviness...
Watching the news non stop gets very depressing..
Thanks for all the encouragement here to list as this is the best thing we can do for our economy...

I cancelled many listings without bids. The ones left with bids did recieve more bids before they ended, and I recieced some inquiries about the closed auctions.

Anyway, I checked new listings in NY(NY city, not NY state)for the 13th, and was surprised at how many there were. I'm sure some of them are automatic relistings, but surely not all.
