For all users delivering items to or sending items from Australia please be aware that a major Australian airline has collapsed today due to financial difficulties.
Australia only has two international airlines and now that one has gone the airline industry here is in chaos.
The airline that has folded is Ansett. Some 17,000 people have been laid off.
Due to union disgust at the failure to save the airline and their members jobs all Australian airports are at the moment closed.
This is preventing the movement of people and freight. Coupled with the American situation, patience will be required by all ebayer's involved in any sort of American/Australian transaction.

I guess spending $40,000,000 US to sponsor the Olympics was not such as good idea...

There was also an airline co in based in the Carolinas (US) that folded yesterday - I think they were just mail and freight haulers. They were in chap 11 trying to re-organize and when the air embargo hit they threw in the towel.
I'll bet in a couple weeks from now there will be a bunch of paypal charge backs due to late arrivals of items.

I have to point out to Dejapooh that the collapse of Ansett had absolutely nothing to do with the Australian Government spending any amount of money on the Oylmpic Games. The collapse of this airline sits fairly and squarely on the shoulders of the New Zealand Government and Air New Zealand who were the owners of Ansett.

The airline in the Carolinas was Midway and they did fly passengers as well. Had lots of non-stop flights and good service. They were already in financial trouble and the loss of these several days of flying just put them over the edge. 1,700 people out of work. They are refunding ticket money, but anyone who happened to hold a Midway travel voucher is out of luck (this was announced on the local news the other day).

Different Midway Airlines -- this one had only used RDU as its hub and been around since the early 90's when American left the RDU airport. It serviced about 20 cities, mostly along the east coast.

Several of my friends have been laid off in the process, but SouthWest is moving in and has already hired some of them, so hopefully it won't be too bad when flights get underway again.

Everyone is partly correct.
Midway Airlines is a regional jet airline serving the East Coast. Midway began operations in November, 1993 at Midway Airport in Chicago. In March 1995, Midway Airlines moved its hub to the Raleigh-Durham International Airport and its headquarters to Durham, North Carolina in August 1995. Midway Airlines is a publicly held company (Nasdaq: MDWY).

no, Ansett paid $40,000,000 US to sponsor the 2000 olympics. They were the OFFICIAL AIRLINE OF THE 2000 Olympic GAMES. Anyhow, they are not anymore.
