Hi I live in Maine, We are getting free flags
They are from The Cemetary, It seems they pull them after Memorial Day and July 4th and keep them, They are giving them out free, maybe in your area they Would do the same, It is not ghoulish to me or some that I have talked To.

Flags are a symbol of division between nations. Can we just stand as one as humankind for once?

gotabook,

Irrespective of the quickdraw's response (over which I'm still scratching my head), I appreciate your passing along that information. Flags are becoming scarce around here, which is actually a good thing!

I was lucky enough to find some today at a garage sale -- 10 of those little ones. I put some on my car and plan to put the rest in my front yard.

gotabook, I'm not offended just appalled. You don't have to go away, I'm interested in learning why people wave flags just after a terrorist attack when they know this "us against them" mentality is what cause the attack in the first place.

quickdraw, let me make sure I understand.

You are appalled that Americans feel compelled right now to show their patriotism?

I'm afraid any explanation I might try to offer would be woefully inadequate in light of that mindset.

quickdraw29...My goodness, you certainly are considerably more evolvedthan the rest of us Neanderthals. One humankind is just dandy until someone has his jackboot on your throat. Then you'd better have something besides a bunch of daisies behind your back. Evil's roots may sometimes hide behind the skirts of nationalism, but they are not born there.

Perhaps if this country had not rallied behind the Stars and Stripes some fifty+ years ago, the flag we would be waving would have a decidedly different look. I don't know about you, but I rather prefer Old Glory to anything with a swastika on it. Had individuals in this country and those of our allies not rallied and fought against that foe, I daresay you could have found a great deal more to be appalled about throughout all the years since.

We fly our flag 365 on our home here.

This week we do it with more pride than ever before!

Never in my life have I seen so many flags being displayed on homes, businesses, cars, etc.

I don't look at it as a....

" symbol of division between nations"

...more of a symbol of freedom.

I highly suspect that the thousands of people that have/will die to preserve it would look at it any other way.

>Can we just stand as one as humankind for once?<

There is no other free country in the world that wouldn't stand behind our flag when the going gets tough.

To see real "division between nations" one only has to look back a few days.

fountainhouse

You are probably right with...

>I'm afraid any explanation I might try to offer would be woefully inadequate in light of that mindset<

....but I had to try.

We fly the American Stars and Stripes every day of the year from our home. Right now we have two displayed...one in it's normal place on the front of our house, and one on the side that is more visible to the road. We have red, white, and blue ribbons on our cars, and print outs of flags in the windows of our cars. I wear a flag pin each day as well.

You want my flag? Come and get it. I dare you.

Gotabook, I don't post on here either, but I will now. Don't let one person's opinion scare you off. I appreciate your telling us about the flags. I was going past a cemetary today and it was lined with flags all along the road - it looked very nice!! Keep the posts coming.

[gotabook] My, challenge someone with an opinion and they hide their head under sand.

[Fountainhouse] Can I just say yes it is a childish way to approach things. For god's sake, citizens in countries for ages have been tooting their own horn yet look how the world is still primitive. If there's one thing I learned in my personal life is swallow your pride, work out our differences. Flags condone pride.

[paperfan] you would be proud of whatever flag you were born under. Name any country where they are not proud of their flag and their country?

Are you just visiting our planet? Every nation except a few are standing behind us during this time of dispair. We have a long history of allies joining forces with us to fight those who attacks us or our allies.

I really don't know that a flag represents a division between nations.
In my mind the flag represents a country and it's people.

From the very first shot in the Revolutionary War to the present, our
flag has stood for our ideas and way of life. Since then, it has been challenged several times. We have fought to remain free and have been successful. On 9-11, our flag and our ideas were challenged again. We again will show the strength of the flag.

If your child smashed the window of your car because you told them not to drink alcohol, would you smash their window?

Would you say, "It's my house, so it's my way or the hiway." What is to be gained by that? That's the effect of flag waving. Maybe working on your communication skills and teaching skills will produce better results.

Quite frankly I've never seen a flag prevent a war.

There is an interesting article in a Canadian newspaper this morning that Canada's largest flag manufacturer has just received an order from a US wholesaler for 2,000,000 US flags. They are working on the order around the clock.

Thank you gotabook.

I fly the flag on holidays and occasionally on non-holidays. On Tuesday I humbly ran it up because of pride of being an American, to show support for the rescue workers, show unity with my fellow Americans and let the cowards know we mean business.

I have been flying it every day since Tuesday with pride.

THE EFFECT OF FLAG WAVING is to demonstrate that you stand behind the Constitution of the Unites States & the Nation, knowing that there may come a time when the ideology of another's beliefs may cause you to defend and even possibly give your life, in order to defend the Freedom and privledges that you have, in the greatest nation in the world.

quickdraw29 - I appreciate your inputs, as it is truly unique to hear from a person that is able to type, while they are able to physically watch their digestive system work. A true medical marvel

My comment was.....

"There is no other free country in the world that wouldn't stand behind our flag when the going gets tough."

The response.....

>Are you just visiting our planet?<

No. I have been here for quite a while.

>Every nation except a few are standing behind us during this time of dispair. We have a long history of allies joining forces with us to fight those who attacks us or our allies.<

Ummm, that is EXACTLY what I meant in my statement. Every FREE country in the civilized world would be happy to stand behind our flag. It is a symbol of freedom that many have died for. (and will continue to do so)

As our elected officials have stated...

You are either with us in this fight or against us.

fountainhouse

You ARE correct.....

>I'm afraid any explanation I might try to offer would be woefully inadequate in light of that mindset<

gotabook

Please, post one more time and ask them to lock up this thread.

To all the rest of you that KNOW what the American flag represents and are displaying it with pride......thank you!

PS

Cannot you lock this up as it realy has run it's course and has little to do with ebay???

quickdraw29, you said, "I'm interested in learning why people wave flags just after a terrorist attack when they know this "us against them" mentality is what cause the attack in the first place."

So the attack Tuesday on the WTC and Washington, D.C. was caused by our "us against them" mentality?????????????

Surely you didn't mean to say such a ridiculous thing, DID YOU?

You can't POSSIBLY believe we fell under terrorist attack by inhumane, calculating, cold-blooded MADMEN because we display an "us against them" mentality in flying the U.S. flag, CAN YOU?

Osama bin Laden hates the U.S. because we supported the Saudi government in power years ago (a government which he hated), and the PLO hates the U.S. because we've always defended Israel (and rightly so). Bid Laden doesn't hate us for the same REASON the PLO (and other terrorists) hate us, but that doesn't really matter to them---their GOAL is the same.

These terrorists hate us because they've been taught to do so since early childhood, and their lives revolve around an INHERITED, UNQUESTIONING hatred. Proverbs 22:6 says, "Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it." Truer words were never spoken. When you train a child to love, he will love; when you train a child to hate, he will hate.

They don't want peace with Israel, they want annihilation of the Jews and Israel's ally, the United States. Bin Laden is just the MEANS by which they are able to fulfill their dreams of enemy-killing (Israel and America) that they've been instilled with since birth. Bid Laden, with his OWN insane grudge against us, uses these maniacs to carry out his plots against us, then runs for the hills to hide.

And you would DARE to suggest that a show of patriotism by Americans flying flags is "dividing nations" and preventing us from "standing as one as humankind"??????????

I'll let you in on a little secret---the "nations" BECAME "divided" when the terrorists attacked, and it wasn't FLAG-FLYING that kept us from "standing as one humankind", it was the slaughter of some 5,000 U.S. citizens last Tuesday.

Those flags represent 300 million Americans "standing as one humankind"
AGAINST TERRORISTS.

How could you miss the point?
