Thanks for all of your suggestions to my previous question. Here's another one for you.

I have an auction that ended on the 6th. The buyer said that he would send a money order out. I never received it. He lives in Manhattan about 5 or so miles north of the WTC. This is not a high ticket item (not even close). I am thinking of just letting it go and not even leaving a neg (I always neg for non-payment.). I would feel so bad for bothering him about something so trivial with him so close to this. He may even have friends or family who are missing! He may even have worked there.

What do you think? Just drop it a good idea?

Its been a shock for everyone hasn't it? Interesting that I had a lot of biddders win on Wednesday and Thursday from Manhattan. Everyone has their own way of coping... and it shows.

Yup.

There are other things far more important.

It's a little tough right now having auctions end and not knowing where the winning bidders may be from.

Case in point

There was an item I was going to bid on that gave a shipping address of the WTC.

A grim reminder indeed.

I would wait another ten days or so and then send a gentle and formally worded reminder and see what happens.

I don't think being stern and enforcing rigid rules avails a seller anything in the long run. Some people are just plain slow, or scattered and disorganized, and a gentle reminder is generally all they need. I have a 98-99% completion rate and do reminders just a few times a month. Every time I do, it takes maybe 10 minutes and yields perhaps $100-125.

I do follow the reminder with the NPB, and that yields another series of payments, and so I only file for the FVF perhaps once or twice a month. Even then, that prompts a payment in about 1/3 the cases.

And this you see is the reason that I don't neg deadbeats. While this tragedy is right in our faces, life does occur, even at other times.

Deadbeats pi** me off, no doubt about it. They waste my time, and my listing fee. But I still have my item, so they haven't ripped me off.

I would neg a harrasser, I would neg someone who sent me a check from a closed account, I would neg someone who returned an item different from the one I sold to them. There are other instances I'm sure that I'm not thinking of off the top of my head.

But, while I file for my FVF's, I don't neg deadbeats. What if you did, and the person really was in the hospital, or had a death in the family. What would you have accomplished?

I also have a buyer in NYC. He emailed me the 10th and said he would Paypal. I have not heard from him. I could really care less about the money, I just wanted to know if he was o.k. My P.O. told me zip codes 10014 and lower were affected, he is zip code 10014.

I sent an email yesterday, just telling him I hoped he and his loved one are o.k., and to let me know if he is o.k. if he gets a chance. I haven't heard from him. I may just send the item anyway, even though he hasn't paid for it. It just seems like the human thing to do. Maybe if he is going though a hard time, the gesture may help, even if only a tiny bit.

This post is a bit off topic...

I have a buyer whose mailing address is 39 Broadway. His item went out from California on Wednesday, 9/5/01, first class mail.

I haven't heard from him and I'm concerned. Does anyone know if that building is OK?

Lucy

My buyer's zip code is 10006.

Thanks all. I'm just going to let it go. If he contacts me about it, then I'll finish the transaction. I do hope that he didn't have any friends or family (or himself!) involved in this tragedy.

Lucy According to my map, 39 Broadway is only about 1/2 mile from the WTC.

Hi BH,

Thanks for the information - I spent probably an hour yesterday trying to find where his building is located.

I'm glad it's not right across the street. Hopefully I'll hear from him - sure do hope he's OK.

What a mess...

ohmslucy, with all of the debris from those buildings, 1/2 mile is right in the middle of it. if nothing else, he was probably evacuated

FYI, the current list of impacted NYC ZIP5's and Post Offices is here:

Longer term, we have been advised that "he Postal Service's primary channel for information regarding disaster recovery
is www.usps.com".

Sorry Moderators, I guess this is off topic. My nephew works in NYC for Reuters and has lost friends, but is in UK at present. It would appear that UK TV shows different pictures than are shown on US TV.
Censorship on AW and by the US media.

Hello Greetings,

The other day I happened to catch an international news broadcast, I think it was from London.

I saw some news segments reporting things that were taking place in Britain. I didn't see these on our US networks, likely because they were involved in giving us minute-to-minute coverage of what was going at the site.

Thanks for your kind expression of sympathy.

Lucy

Sorry Sara. I am an International eBay trader. My buyers and I will have problems with shipping and just thought they would like to learn that US TV does not always reveal everything.

Many thanks for your comments Lucy.
My experience of the USA media is that there is no world outside USA. This comment is made with family and friends working in Hollywood, San Francisco, NYC and Toronto. But 800 million folks in Europe joined a three minute silence on Friday for USA.

Thank you, UK.

It's been an absolutely horrendous week here in the US.

What you just said about 800 million folks brought tears to my eyes.

I would just drop a line telling him that your thoughts are with him and not to worry about anything on your end. If he wants to reply he will, it wouldn't hurt to hold on to the item for a while and if after a reasonable time you don't hear anything, just relist. They are going through tragic times there, much more than those of us who are in other states or have no one directly involved.
