I just sold my 19 inch computer monitor, but now I am just so confused as to how to pack it. I put that I would charge 45 dollars to ship because that's what the other peopole are charging. I did not do this to inflate, rather to be insured that I have enough for packing however I do it.

Does those places like MailBoxes.Etc do it, and is it unreasonably expensive. Last month they charges me 4 dollars to pack a 12 ounce celluar phone. If I don't go that route, where and what should i buy to pack it? thanks a lot.

the best is to put it back in its original carton with the styrofoam padding,if you have them??
if you dont have them, the best is to ask shops where they sell such packaging material and see if they will fit your monitor.
if not,you have no choice but to turn it over to the professional who can do it,without the proper packing, your monitor wont make it.

The way we do it at the shop is to double wrap the monitor in large bubble wrap and put it into the appropriate size of box. Then put that box into another box that is large enough to surround the first box completely with styro peanuts.

triggerfish,
this is the way to pack fragile items ,not sure it is good enough for electronic goods.
too many parts in there can be impacted

Actualy tigger fish is quite right,
And I ship all my flat panels like that
(like 20 a month and no problem)
If you are O.K. with spending
The money go to mail boxes etc and
Get them to pack it, but send it off your self,
I just shipped a flat panel and they packed it for $11.00 (two boxes, buble wrap, peanuts, and extra padding near the lcd)
But it would cost me $45 to ship them ups ground from there, so I drove to usp and paid $16.10 to send it dirrect,
For packing Mail Boxes is great, for shipping rates they really suck.

Saweemosman: Depending on how far you are shipping the monitor, it is going to cost more than $45.00 to do it. Unless you get it for free, the packaging material alone will exceed $20.00, The few things you will need are a strong sturdy box that will give you at least 4 inches of clearance on each side of the monitor, some 1” bubble wrap, and 2 sheets of 2” Styrofoam sheets. Styrofoam sheets are available at hardware or building supply stores, and is the type that is used for insulation in buildings and cost approximately $8.00 per sheet. You might be able to get some clean, used insulating material pieces from construction sites, or building contractors for free.

Wrap the monitor in a layer of 1inch bubble wrap securely to prevent water or other liquid from getting to it. Secure the monitor properly and tight in the box with at least 4 inches of Styrofoam on each side. This will be within the specifications of UPS or FedEx. This will exceed the 70-pound limit set by USPS, but below the 150-limit for UPS and FedEx. Make sure that the total girth and length of the box does not exceed 130 inches, or you will have to ship it via motor freight.

Do not use packing peanuts, because it cannot prevent the monitor from moving around and compressing them. Even if there is no physical visible damage to the monitor, it can develop shock damage from improper handling. Hopefully this will not happen, but if it does, and the packaging is less than 4 inches, UPS might deny the claim on the grounds of improper packaging.

You can save yourself the packaging cost if you contact a nearby store that sell televisions or computer monitors, they should have large boxes and packaging material that you can have for nothing. Wish you all the best in your shipping.

If you have a computer store nearby, you can check with them and see if they have a box that they were going to throw away.

We get the best boxes from our local computer store and they don't cost us a penny. Not to mention the saving of our environmental resources.

Would not recommend packing peanuts for this as the monitor would "sink" to the bottom and be susceptible to damage. Styrofoam packing material is the way to go.

Good Luck!
