Help needed from Booksellers:

Does anyone know how to remove smudges and surface stains from the page edges of a book?

Try an artgum eraser first, then (carefully) medium sandpaper if the stain is just on the edges.

I'm fond of the Staedtler Mars Plastic eraser for this and most everything else. I prefer not to overdo any cleaning--better a bit of a light mark than a damaged book.

If you have a lot of books that need repair, buy some real cheapo books, mess them up in like fashion and practice your technique.

If the sandpaper doesn't work, use a wire brush.

Gosh... a wire brush seems kind of harsh! That won't damage the pages?

Had to respond to this sense I have several times "Removed Stains" by rubbing so hard with an eraser that I removed the stain by creating a nice big HOLE.

Well the stain was gone, and the book ended up in the trash or a cross the room!!!!!!!!!!
