A couple of days ago I received a PayPal payment ($17.50) for a book that somebody won. The notice from PayPal had no eBay item number or name of the item - I was able to match it up by the price.
This bothers me, I fear the winner could at some point retract his payment from PayPal and I would have no proof of anything. I have emailed him 3 times to confirm the item number and name of the book but he has never responded.
Maybe I'm worried about nothing but I just have a funny feeling about this. What would you do?

If you have the money and you know it's the right auction, what are you really waiting for? Ship the item, use Delivery Confirmation to cover yourself and get on with it. Sounds like the person is away from the computer or is just real busy.

Does the email address match the winner? If so, sure, send the book. I don't see this as much different than receiving a check where the only note is "eBay item."

Don't blame you a bit for your concern, but this is something like receiving a check without a note or auction #
I don't understand why people do that & specially with PayPal, they do it all the time though.
Just match up the amount & mail it.
I'm not sure DC is proof of mailing for PayPal though. I think they want insurance for proof of mailing.
You might want to check this out with Paypal.

Actually, DC is the form for paypal. Paypal in their infinite wisdom doesn't think the green insurance forms are valid because "they can be changed." (You know how all of us sellers are crooks that way.)
Because the DC is barcoded and can be checked online, that is the cover your butt method preferred by paypal.
