I currently sell in the antique porcelain category. The sales have dropped off tremendously. Any advice or comments welcome. I am debating whether to continue listing or lay off for a while in hopes that things will pick up for the holiday season. I have even taken a loss on some unique items, ouch!

My sales have been pretty terrible as well. I primarily sell books and am on the second relist on many things with few hits and fewer bids. I have no advice for you...I am going to slow way down on listing on ebay and place more things on Amazon and Half and wait out the AFA. Do you have someplace else you can list items?

Kyna,

I've never listed any where else. Do you have any suggestions? I've always thought e-bay had the highest viewership and have stuck with it. But is the market here too saturated? I've heard several people say it is way down from what it used to be. They are talking from several years experience.

I primarily sell books on Half.com. Since
9-11 sales have been terrible. All of a sudden the past four days sales have increased. They are no where near my daily sales before the 11th but they are now starting to pick-up.

I do sell some items on eBay. My sell through rate has been OK. Nothing to really write home about. My main problem is getting paid. I'm selling but so far I haven't received very many payments. I'm hoping I won't end up with a bunch of dead beats on top of meager sales. We'll see, it is still a little early to tell.

Colonel,

Out of well over 200 sales I have only had 1 deadbeat bidder which I find amazing, and maybe I shouldn't speak too soon. That person was removed. It amazes me that there aren't more except I think people become addicted to e-bay and don't want to lose their privelege of bidding.

Sales are way down down down! Have started to limit my listings and refuse to put out stuff that I waited to the fall to sell. Sell mostly books and toys but forget it on ebay.

It seems to me that Collectables were the meat of E-Bay, I also thought thats where most of their money was generated.I don't sell that much in those categories but I would say when alot of the sellers that do quit listing E-Bay is flat going to feel that one. My sales are o.k. but I can see where its going to be a lousy Christmas if I don't post everywhere else I can.

Our bidders are starting to come back tonight. We ended above 50% for the second time since the 11th.

I also noticed tonight that the A4A listings are in sharp decline.

September is typically the pits for any type retail. I know that there are different circumstances this month but every since I have been doing eBay sales have been slow in September. This is by far the worse, but before all the September 11th such started my sales werent so bad.
Hits have been WAY DOWN this month, lets all hope thats as we all get back to our noraml lives things will get better. I would like to reccomend all of you to go to my actions and spend your tax refund. I'll get this ecomny rolling : )

we've been using bargainandhaggle.com since July... it's been an okay alternative - free listing for 30-days, quick relist...

Mhillyrd:

I have no personal experience with this site, but what about rubylane? I believe they specialize in antiques-anyone know more about it?

Half.com sales of Harry Potter trading cards are brisk - this will be my biggest month ever since I started selling there.

Ebay sales of trading cards is DOWN but my handmade item sales are UP (keeping me very busy).

Its just not something you can predict right now, I guess.

Overall down a bit, but I mostly sell comic books so it's not like a raging power house. Even the computer stuff I sell though isn't going that well.

At work I deal with our e-commerce orders and since 9/11 orders have been down, and we're just starting to get back to 'normal' levels again. So I expect things to start picking up again.

We had a shop on Ruby Lane for a few months. We got only one question and no purchases. Perhaps the smalls do better on that site. It is worth a try.

My regular Books Games and Records are doing pretty bad. But I found some Barbie/Francie clothes on their cards from 1965, they are going through the roof! I can't even believe how well they are doing!

I invested $6.00 total for these outfits on Monday morning and I am making a profit of a few hundred today (and that is before the end of auction snipers!!!).

It seems like it just depends on what we are selling. There is sure a market for vintage Barbie right now, but I can't seem to give away my regular stuff.

thanks kyms! I generally sell books but sales are dismal in that area~ but I picked up about 11 older barbies and some clothes and accessories this summer so I will try marketing those off ~ anything to pay the rent ( actually thank goodness my husband works~ this is a hobby that we have come to depend upon though ) I am trying amazon marketplace and even listed on yahoo!
I think sales must be depending upon what you are selling~
I think someone else mentioned that items that bring back happy memories are doing well~ and that would make sense for Barbie. Also I know that I am not listing any items that are collectible as some of my books did so poorly that someone made a good deal and I cant' afford to bid myself! that leaves the field open for the collectible type of item if there are very few of them on.Hope sales increase for people who are experiencing low bids.

It is definitely time to find a niche in your category rather than just list as usual.
(I'm the one who said to sell happy memories ).
Let your bidders pamper themselves ~ bid on a treat ~ spoil themselves a bit.
Try to find the "intangible" part of the tangible item, so to speak.
I sell clothing.
Believe me, no one needs what I sell.
They just want it and it makes them feel good.
If you think really hard about who your target market is, you will find a way to reach them.
(lucky me, I'm a shopaholic just like my bidders so it didn't take as much creative thinking!)
The bidders are out there ~ help them to find you!
Best of Luck!
