I have a Power MAC 7300 that has been enhanced with tons of extra memory. I have a DSL connection. I can surf to absouletly any site have have no problems whatsoever, even with java, flash, cgi or anything else.

Except for the last two days with Ebay! Here's what happens when I go to list an item:

1. Sign in with my password
2. Choose catagory
3. Go to the continue listing page. The screen turns white, it shows as loading and stalls at 218K. A few seconds later the cursor freezes and there is no way to escape. I have to do a forced re-start.

Any idea what the problem could be? The ONLY thing I can think of is that I listed a couple of items for a friend recently whose computer was in the shop. I used his log-in and password to list his items. I clicked "do not save log-in info" so that there would be no conflict with my existing ebay cookie. I can log in using my password with no problem at all, I just can't complete a liting without freezing up.

Help!

Thanks

harleytrader2000,

What browser are you using? Have you tried multiple browsers yet? If not... switch your browser and see if the same problem occurs (if you're using netscape... try I.E. and vice versa). You may also want to try deleting the cache in your browser just in case you have a corrupted file in there. Hope this helps!

Try clearing your history and your cache, especially your cookies. Sounds like a misbehaving cookie.

Other things: the usual, rebuild the desktop. Allocate more memory to your browser (Get info on the application).

Yeah, those listing pages are humongous...

I have a 7200/90 OS8.6 in the shop and have used both MSIE 5.0 and the latest iCab browser to list....the pages load a bit slow (old processor and wireless network connection near its limit) but so far so good...

I echo cleaning out thecache and cookie jar and allocating more RAM to the browser program....I use 40MB RAM for MSIE and 20MB for iCab....I do a lot of CAD work so my machines have between 200 and 500MB RAM...I've learned not to skimp on allocating it...

You might also consider doing a sweep with Norton Utilities just to make sure a MSIE file isn't dated wrong or has a bad bundle bit or location reference....I recently had a problem with MSIE on my house computer (8600/250 OS8.6) and sweeping up and defragging the HD not only fixed the problem but speeded up the browser considerably....

Good luck!

I had a problem that started yesterday. Investigation showed it was a bug in a java script. I think it was coming off a banner add as it showed up in many different categories. I am using MacOS 9.2.1 and IE 5
I turned off the execute java scripts in preferences and it worked fine thereafter. I also had a problem that I tracked down to a Paypal logo. Turns out it was trying to load it from cache and the file was corrupted. Cleaning the cache did the trick.
Good luck.

When all else fails, trash your Internet Explorer (or other browser) preferences, clear your cache, clean out your cookies and restart your computer. The internet world isn't always MAC friendly, but for people like me who use macs for my line of work, we don't have a choice. Good luck!!

Harley...

I have a high-powered Mac with a high-speed broadband hookup and the same thing began happening to me last week so I disabled java and java script and the problem stopped. I'm not using it for any site anymore unless absolutely necessary and it's made surfing much less stressful and frenetic...

I don't know if this has any relation to the problem, but earlier this week I started getting messages on the bottom of the browser window that said: Page Loaded but with errors. I think I was using IE but I also use Netscape and can't remember which browser was giving me this message. I almost started a thread here to ask what was going on, as I certainly never got that message before. This has just been happening within the last couple of days so I presumed eBay had or has a javascript error somewhere on the page. This message came both when looking at listings and when trying to list an item for sale.

I have OS 9.1, and AOL. I can't search anywhere on eBay, period. It not only crashes my AOL, it locks up my computer and I have to force a reboot. This just started last week, so I am clueless. I am just not searching for anything right now, so somebody is losing my business.

Pam,

If you have an alternative browser such as Netscape or MSIE, you might try that with the javascript and java turned off...I've had the same success as elfowl with that workaround.

I don't use AOL so I don't know if there is a preference for java and javascript for that browser....

With javascript off, some buttons may not work and it'll take an extra click in some instances to get to an eBay item page...

I've noticed that the more banner ads there are the more problems I've had....maybe the code writers are getting creative in trying to foil ad blocking software like WebFree and it's munging up the browser...hard to know...

Pat,

I do have MSIE through my cable connection, and I did have some luck that way. I hate using that because AOL makes it so easy to mark "favorite places", and I like to mark entire categories. But I can search for individual items going that way. Thanks.

Before going to DSL, I had AOL also. The absolute BEST thing to do is call AOL's technical support. I had a bunch of gripes about their service, but their MAC support was excellent. They will walk you step by step through any possible problem and you'll be fine in no time. I used them on a few occasions and was pleased each time. COULD be an AOL bug on their end.

I access AOL through my cable modem. Last night, there was an outage in my cable access, so I dialed in on the phone lines. I could search on eBay perfectly fine when I did that. It must be a conflict of some sort, between the cable access, AOL, and eBay. I can live with signing on by phone when I need to.
