I average 90% sales and my last bunch I sold 3 out of 11 auctions. I decided it was time for a break after that.

I recently lowered prices on some items that have always sold well, and freshened up listings with some new offerings.

Things have been very disappointing lately, and I thought they couldn't get worse. They are. Sales are continuing to decline. I am beyond worried.

oh yes,,changing listings at ebay & lowering prices doesn't seem to help at all...i put a bunch of goodies on auction,,,ususally go for 10.00 or more each..so i thought well i see people doing 1.00 auctions..i'll try 5.00..10 days...well yes,,,5.00 bid the last 3 minutes..a lot of fragile wrapping too LOL
did accidently sell two bigger items a week ago..seems the over 20.00 stuff sells better..people with a lot of money still have money to spend LOL..

I am also doing so much worse than normal. Right now I have 50 auctions running and 3 bids.

I have been selling some things with BIN but the prices are really low.

What can I say - I will just hang in there. I was doing gangbusters before 9/11. I mean that best I have ever done.

I've become a believer in "it depends on what you are selling" that I see posted here frequently. Last night I searched for a sofa slipcover which I need and found that the prices being paid for slipcovers are alive and well. Kinda wish I was selling them instead of needing one.

Of the ten auctions I posted last week, four have bids, three of which have multiple bids. The others I know aren't very "hot" items, and I priced them at a one-bid sell-through price since I'm being a bit cautious in the current economic climate. My experience is that such auctions usually don't get bids 'til the final day, so I'm not sweating it. On the bright side, the number of pageviews that I've been receiving seems to be pretty much in line with what I would expect, so I'm optomistic about the closing prices.

We usually don't have much to complain about as business has been relatively okay for us in the area of antique furniture and collectibles. However, this week has been downright pathetic. With 15 items up, we have 1 item that has bids. Fortunately, it is a piece of furniture with multiple bids.
This is Worse than the Worst week we had in June (we list year-round).

Things end on Sunday so we are just hoping and praying that the snipers come out to "play". Keeping your fingers crossed and typing is not easy )

last round of 20 auctions all closed w/o a bid - my A4A recipe auctions had some bids so that's good.. but October is NOT getting off to a good starts.

I would have thought the Halloween items would have REALLY taken off - but I am sure if people are more worried about putting food on the table than decorating for Halloween...

Here's hoping for a good Xmas.

I'm switching more to clothing auctions instead of my collectibles. People who are out of work or scared that they might be still need things to wear (as do their kids), and they can't afford to spend full retail. So start thinking from that point of view: staple products that are needed all year around, that people HAVE to buy, but they need them cheaper.

OTOH, high-end items are probably doing pretty well right now (and will get even better toward the holidays), as very wealthy folks are not being hit as hard by the recession or whatever it is. They are not worried about unemployment or meeting their mortgage payment.

It's the stuff in the middle...fun things that you might have blown some bucks on six months ago, but don't absolutely need and can't afford right now...that are being hit hardest.

There just seems to be no rhyme or reason right now. I had 10 auctions close last night and not a single bid. Last Sunday everything sold and for better than expected amounts. Same type of stuff, same price ranges. Just 4 days apart.

Where is that crystal ball??????????

My bidding was very good Right up untill last sunday then the views and bids stopped every thin I have listed from last riday till today has been so far closeing with no bids and most listing had few if any views.

Last night the views on my auctions started incressing so I exspect that it can't be long before bidding starts again.

I have had one bad week since last July so I am not ready to run out and say the world is ending.

also if the looks of the amount of people out at the local stores and resturunts are any signal of where the economy is heading we are in for some really good times very soon.

WEnt out to eat last night and nearly every resturunt includeing mc donalds has a 30 to 60 min wait to get a seat.

There was no place to park at the mall it was wall to wall people couldn't get in to see a movie it was so packed and as we talked with friend who work in these places they say business has been doing well but in the last month they say it been plain over whelming Department store shevles are emptying of lot of Items and the holiday shopping isn't even concidered to have really started yet.

Dman, I heard a report on CNN that said the beef industry was down 15% because people are not going out to eat. I think the media is reporting us into a deep hole. They had a quote by Warren Buffet stating that the country is in a deep recession and it will take a long time to recover.

Harmonygroves, I think big ticket items are down right now. I was thrilled to get a request for shipping quote for one E-Bayer and another that would like to see the same item. With the help of God, perhaps it is picking up. I can't imagine Americans wanting to live like this in the long term.

Pathetic--usually I'd have a few last minute snipes, but practically nothing this go-round (and several $1.00 lots with ZERO bids on them).

Well I have 65 auctions closing tonight 7 have bids which might about cover the cost of the items and the fees for all the auctions.

The BEST news I've had in a long time I applied for 4 jobs this week they have all called me, I've had 2 interviews this week and 2 next. So far the two this week both want me I'm holding off until Wednesday to give them an answer I have 2 interviews on Monday, I guess if get either of those jobs I can forget about taking Columbus day off, anyway I was so happy to start selling full time on eBay and I am even happier to know that I'm really wanted in the job market.

There are lots of jobs out there you just have to knock on a few doors to find them. As soon as I have an income from a regular Job I'll focus more heavily on my web sites, they are now blowing away ebay anyway and I only hang on over there because I think I'm pushing people to the sites with the advertising I mail with their items.

Anyway I still hope it picks up even with the job we will do the auctions with all the monies we make on the auctions going straight to paying off credit cards. That's one thing that grew too large with ebay is our credit card debt.

Well I can only tell you what I have been seeing here in Upstate NY.

Now I can under the Beef industry could be down but its not because people are not going out to eat I think it has a lot to do with the lack of travel and many empty hotel around city with large airports.

As far as the US being in a deep recession I think you need to stop believeing all you hear on the TV News SInce the 9/12 we have been getting lots of misinformation feed to us from large news sources look around your self locally.

Also Don't gauge the economy by what the stock market is doing This will make you dizzy

Keep in mind the money pulled from stocks when it reopened a good part of it was profits the loosers were the ones that sat still much of these profits are starting to flow into the economy.

Also the airlines have got there free baleout money and low cost loan garentees they are no longer in trouble Problem is this didnt fix the problem no matter how well off the airlines are they can't make people fly with them so travel is still a little slow now.

Motels and hotel in the northeast today were reporting that even though at first they recieve many cancelation from the fall travelers there businesses are still filling up and they are doing 90% better then they thought they would be this weekend but most of there business is from people driveing not flying.

so it seems the economy is still very strong.

I have just been surffing ebay and I can tell you people are bidding very very well depending on catagory from the small section I surffed I can tell you Books, old advertizeing and vintage tv guides are doing very well.

Like I said I can only tell you what I know from what I see where I am and I have lived through many recession and its not looking like one at this time if anything else the way people are hauling out the TV's , DVD player, video game , Computers and other item out of the walmart stores I would say that spending has trippled what it was before 9/11 ..

I have never had an AUCTION on ebay close without a winner. Never has happened, and never will. OTOH, I've had fixed priced listings end without biddres. Something tells me that the people complaining about "auctions" ending with no bids are really running fixed priced listings. You may find that you'll do better setting up your own shop.

NO thats not it I runn most near 90% of my listing with a buy it now price and most of my sales on Ebay are within 12 to 20 hours of listing with Buy it now

Fixed price is the new trend the only part of fixed price trend that hasn't caught on at ebay is there store fronts ...

I have had 12 BIN auction in the last 7 weeks close within 2 to 3 hours of being listed..

Very few with bin price get sniped with the starting bid but there are a few every week..

I just ended 4 out of 8 of my $1NR auctions that have been active for over 24 hours with NO BIDS.

I have NEVER had them go that long without at least one bid.

I ended them.....no way can I afford to give my goods away.

I guess its time to find other work!

I'll still watch these boards as I'm totally addicted!

Everyone has been great.....THANK YOU!!

Packer, how depressing. Let's all wait a couple of weeks before we throw in the towel. I am beginning to get a few questions here and there which makes me more hopeful. It isn't normal for us Americans to stop spending money. I don't think it will go on for much longer.

My auctions have really taken off in the past couple days, lots of bids and BINs like crazy. Just today I had 5 BINs, four of which were listed this morning. Don't know why, just hope it keeps up!

I do think things are picking up, the stores I went to today were all busy. Good luck to all here, hope sales start looking up for you too!

PD~
if you are referring to auctions that start at .01 and referring to them as an AUCTION then you should go to a real auction sometime, real auctions don't start everything at .01 either.

Actually in the heyday of ebay we were making over 10,000 a month we would list at retail then we went to 10 off, then 20 off, now we are at actual cost plus about 20%(in the last few weeks), it's no way to run a business but I would rather turn the cash than have the stuff sitting on the shelf. Even at these prices stuff is not selling.

I would have to agree that the BIN is neck and neck with the auctions, that is probably the reason that our web sites are doing so good, we list everything there at retail or 5-15% off if we want to move it. Also people are happier over there, most are repeat customers and you don't seem to attract the morons and fraud cases that ebay does.

Also one of my old statements "we are a microwave generation living in a crock pot world" everybody wants it faster than they did yesterday. I believe that is one of the reason that BIN has taken off so well and also why our web sites are doing so well. If they are a repeat customer they know we ship everything within 24 hours they can place an order on the web site before 11:00AM Pacific time(sometimes as late as 2:00PM) and they could receive their order within 24 hours. It's stupid how so many people will buy an item for 30.00 and pay 32.00 in shipping for next day air.

Another note from my last post tonight to this one I got a call from one of the companies I interviewed with today, all know I have other interviews, they just offered me 5.00 more an hour and full health insurance, usually they split it with the employee 60/40 which I think is a scam most of the time because of the group rates they get as opposed to the published rates. Anyway I have 2 interviews on Monday.......let the bidding begin!!

Right now I'm writing up as many ads as I can,I can always list them later as I use auctionwatch for alot of my inventory anyway. At least I will be able to launch auctions when I need them. Its better than not doing anything.

I am rather disappointed in sales lately. Went an entire week with not a single sale on half--that's real slow. Just had two in the last two days, but even that's not a big deal. My eBay sales are just a dribble. I was depending on half because eBay has been so stinky. I hope things pick up. I depend on my online sales to help me pay bills and put some bucks away--not to get rich.

wranglers, I don't start stuff at $.01, but I do often start stuff at a dollar. There were two auctions, out of a thousand, that I've run on ebay starting at a dollar that I've lost money on, and both of them ended 9/12/01. People were busy doing other things.

If I have an item that retails at $200, wholesales at $100, and I start the auction at $50, it's an auction. If I start the auction at $150, it's not really an auction, but nearer to a retail sale.

Anybody runnng a business like this would be FAR better off setting up their own shop. When you pay ebay's fees, what you're paying them for is to bring you customers. If there are no bidders, as many of you have suggested, then why are you paying ebay? Are you hoping to help Meg pay for her winter vacation in Tahiti?

Plenty of good places to set up a decent shop on the web. Most of them are a fraction of the cost of ebay.
