I sell womens clothing - using an Olympus that I dropped and now need a new Camera. I am using a borrowed Nikon Coolpix 775 right now and the pics are terrible - bad reds, pinks, etc. I would like to buy a camera that can give me true reds and bright pink -plus check and plaids. Am I asking too much for a digital camera? I realize that I may need a $$$ camera. Will a camera that does low res give me better pics? Any suggestions?

Well, I will be the first to recommend the Sony Mavica. I love mine. The new one is about 399 and has a zoom lens, but I use the older one, since I don't need a zoom for ebay items.
I take my picutures outdoors or in natural light and have had great success in getting the true color of clothing.

I have to shoot indoors in the winter - snow you know - using tons of halogen work lights - are you getting the elusive check?

You might want to take a look at the Kodak DC 4800. Not only are there adjustments for various kinds of lights, there are also color adjustments in case you have to tweak the color a bit to compensate for the yellowness of halogen. I don't believe they are still producing the DC 4800, but you should be able to find it in the $400-500 range. There is also an impressive set of Macro, Wide angle, and telephoto lenses available for it.
