I have a Sony Mavica model MVC-FD71. Tonight, out of the blue, after every picture it beeps and says Disk Error. I have tried about 10 disk now and the same thing happens. The pictures are there and look great.

Does anyone have any idea what is happening to my camera?

I do use it everyday. I have had it since October 1999. So I guess it is getting old. But I really like my camera. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

The disk error is c:13:01. If that tells you anything.

I have search Sony.com and can not find anything about this.

I have had one for aboout the same time, and I love it too!

I seem to recall the same thing happening to mine about a year ago. trouble is , I can't remember exactly what I did about it!

Did you let your battery pack run down very low, and then take pics with the signal flashing? Keep re-charging it and using it nearly fully charged each time for a while.

Do you get the message on your monitor screen after you trim or change your images? And then when you pull them up again , some of the image is missing, or only on the camera screen?

I'll have a look at mine and see if it jogs my memory; I know it scared me to death when I saw it; but it's working great now. I still think it may have been to do with the battery...

I have 2 batteries. About the same age. I always run the battery totally out (when the screen shows the dead battery I change it). One is in the camera and the other on the charger, always.

"Do you get the message on your monitor screen after you trim or change your images? And then when you pull them up again , some of the image is missing, or only on the camera screen?"

I have no idea want you are asking. I take all my pictures on a disk, then go to explore and move them from the A drive to the c drive. I do all my cropping. The pictures look fine. The beeping and message has me worried.

Here's a website for Mavica users, but not a Sony site. Has a FAQ link .

Sorry I couldn't make this an active link below.

Select "Menu" with the control button.

You will find in the Camera mode that you have the option of turning the Beep off or on.

Sorry I couldn't be more helpful! I think mine wasn't anything too complicated, probably even fixed itself, almost.

Best of luck anyway. Let us know how it turns out.

I know, I know !! I just had this happen 2 weeks ago, I re-charged my battery pack, bought new disks, but kept getting the C13:01 error; I went to the Photo Board on eBay, and a really nice person said it was the button battery that needed changing, and it was! I wasn't even aware of that little battery - duh ! So, instead of paying Sony $3.00 per minute for Tech help on the phone, I spent $2.49 and it worked ! It's a CR2025 battery that's available everywhere - I got mine at a Rite-Aid, but also have seen them at the market, Radio Shack, etc. Hope this helps!

Are the disks you are using formatted or unformatted? If unformatted, and you attempt to use them in the camera, you can sometimes get an error. Try placing one of the disks in the camera and use the format disk command right away to see what happens.

OZGIRL ... (or anyone that knows) Could you referr me to where the battery that is used for the battery button is located ? I too have had this problem ... I thought it was due to a bad battery ... it makes sense that it very well good be due to the battery that is used for the battery flase ... I am not aware that there even is one ... I can't find anything in the book about this ... I really appreciate your help .... Thanks !!!!

I'm at work, otherwise I'd go look up the error for you. In your manual, in the back, it lists all the error codes and what they mean. You may have damaged the disk drive inside the camera.

Does someone out there have their manual handy?

I called my husband at home and he looked it up in our manual, c:13:01 means unformated disk or unusable disk. However, the low battery could also cause a problem giving a false code.

I have the manual for the FD73

For Warning Messages:

Disk Error:

Trouble is with the disk.

Or the floppy disk loaded is not MS=DOS formatted (512 bytes X 18 sectors).

On my camera, when looking like you are going to take a picture on the lower left side in the back there is a door. Slide open the down and inside is a big like watch battery. I will get that replaced and see if it corrects itself.

I wish I could fine the manual. I have recently moved my office and I am not sure if it is with office stuff or household stuff and at this point I have not locate it. It could be that the manual theft took it. That happens around here alot. But in months, years to come they always return it!

I have tried 10 disk. I have reformatted them at my pc, and on the camera. Nothing works.

Like I said. It is still taking great pictures. But you have to power off between each one because of this message and the beeping. I do not think it is really anything to do with the disk or the disk drive.

richierich,

That beeping sound is actually a Sony Safety feature to remind ebay sellers to put their clothes back on before taking pictures of stainless steel teakettles.

Eventer LOL!

I had the same problem with my FD83 about a year ago. Tried new discs, formatted, and charged the battery. No luck.

I called Sony- they said "bring it in." Repaired the drive-- they have a flat rate for repairs, I think it was about $120 or so.

They fixed it somehow. I didn't wanna pay $100+, but I needed a working camera for the business.

I just checked, and I don't see any little button battery door on the FD83.

Eventer - That is funny!

Ok - I just put in a brand new battery, the watch type battery. Same problem! Gosh, I was hoping it would fit it for $2.91!

I change the big battery, the one that goes on the charger, still get errors.

Now I guess I call Sony. Wish me luck.

This is almost to good to be true.

I called Sony/Mavica ( 888-449-7669). They have a replacement program. I purchase this refurbished camera in October 1999. For a flat rate of $171.00 they will ship me another refurbished camera. They do put an $800 hold on my credit card until they receive my camera.

So by Monday, I should have a new (to me) camera for $171.00. I asked a 100 questions because it just sounds to good to be true.

As for the error - it is an internal disk drive error. My disk and batteries are all fine (no kidding).

If there turns out to be any problems related with the swapping of cameras for $171.00 I will be sure to post it here.

Hi again,
I do have the manual for mine, and it kept telling me the same thing: Disk Error or Unformatte Disk; I used brand new formatted disks, but kept getting the same error; but I was lucky, as I said, it only needed a new button battery; mine is the FD-7 though, an older model and the battery is located on the bottom right side just below the LCD screen; slide it off and there's the battery.
Good luck with the replacement, and keep us posted !

I have a FD 71 and while I have never had this problem, there is a "button Battery on the back bottom left hand corner just under the bright adjustment.. There are two little lines running vertically and if you push the door to the left, you will see the battery. Looks like one you would put in your computer.

Just a thought. You are not trying to use those floppy disks that have the plastic thing on the part where you put it into the camera are you. I don't know what it is called. The piece where the name of the disk is printed. I was told you can have all kinds of problems if you use the ones that have the plastic tab rather than the metal tab. I've got a whole box of them sitting here that I bought, not even thinking to look, and they all have plastic tabs.

Pintpower - I used the disk that have the plastic tab and have for 2 years without one problem. I don't know if that is it or not. I guess I'll see when I get my replacement camera.

FYI - Plastic tabbed dics can cause all sorts of problems. The first & last time I used them the plastic tab peeled off inside of my camera. Try pulling the plastic tabs off by hand, then try the metal ones. Metal good, plastic bad.

This beeping sound. Does it happen when you are backing away to take a picture?

When I first got my Mavica, mine did that. But then I lost some weight & the sound went away.

Strange.

mrspock- Thanks for the idea, I had tried that to - no difference.

I have got to tell you all - The replacement camera is all ready here. I could not believe it. I was hoping for Monday!

Everything is working in the replacement using the same disk that mine said disk error on. Yes, the plastic tabs. I see no reason to chang. I have been using them for over a year with no problem.

Thanks every one for all the ideas.

Now, I send back mine and watch the credit card bill!
