Just won a book, and have requested insured media mail shipping. He gave me a cost of $12! My chart only goes to 14 pounds for about $6... If insurance is $2, how much does a book have to weigh for $10 (Figuring the box and packing weigh a pound.) ???

(I'm betting he'll send via priority. He hasn't stated how it will arrive.)

how much does your book weigh, some sellers ship in box.
what he quotes you probably include handling-standing in line is no fun these days.

Guess he's not shipping Bill Clinton's memoirs..that wouldn't account for more than a couple of ounces of hot air.

There is a separate rate table for 15 to 70 lbs; above 15 the rate per pound gets pretty low.

Heh.....you have to remember that "handling" now includes the $4.00 spent at McDonalds on the way back from the post office now! All that standing in line drains the vitamins out of the system!!!!

"Costs" add up you know!

Having requested media mail twice, he is now willing to state he is shipping via priority. Not a preference for me on a book so large.

He didn't state shipping method or costs in auction and I didn't ask. So, I suppose it is my fault.

I suppose lucky for me he didn't ask for $50 in shipping... since I bid without asking. But, having requested media twice, I will have to make due without buying from him again. Peeps like this run newbies off from Ebay.

My ID is a newbie, but I'm not. Seems like if he checked my bid history, he would ship media for the return business!

Consider it an expensive lesson, and as you stated, it is not safe to assume they will ship it how you want it shipped without clearing it first. I once was interested in a video tape, that had not shipping quote. I emailed, and got a reply of $6 or $8 - I didn't even have to bother following through and saying that media mail it could be sent for $1.33, because I knew this guy was making his money on the handling fees.

If I were you since the seller didn't specify a shipping method in his auction, I would email him back and let him know that you assumed since no shipping method was stated, that you would have the choice of how it was shipped, "especially since you already realize the big difference between shipping media mail and the cost to ship heavy books via priority mail." Wouldn't hurt and if this sellers wishes to gain your repeat business, he will gladly comply with your wishes.
