With all the talk of the added safety procedures and more jobs added to protect our mail system another rate increase is evident. I have already heard be on the lookout for a BIG RATE JUMP in addition to the one already proposed.
What can we do to survive? People can only pay so much for shipping on an item before it becomes to expensive to buy. I know there are other services available but they tend to go up along with the post office increases.
Any idea out there????

I think there will still be competitive rates for the really small/light stuff (1lb & under) and the specialty stuff (media, etc) but for the 2-3lb & up stuff I already use UPS since the last couple of rate increases at usps because I am able to get better rates which include insurance and tracking through UPS. The service is good...Trackability is WAY better than usps anyway, and the insurance is much more user friendly than usps. Have never had a lost or damaged package yet. I read that other UPS thread which is sad yet laughable, but keep in mind that represents a VERY small minority of parcels shipped.

That could become the case for marginal or frivilous purchase items. But if it goes up for me as the small seller, it's going up for my competitors and the mail order companies as well. So when they raise their shipping charges, I raise mine & still remain competitive.
As for B&M shops, they will face the same price hike. Even if their items are shipped in by truck, there'll be an impact on them.
When gas prices went ballistic, I thought I'd see a boom in mail order items. But my shipping prices actually went up..not the postage but the price of packing materials which were trucked in & subject to higher prices. So any price advantage was quickly lost. Same will happen here.
