It has been necessary to get myself a new email address for my ebay buying habit due to the demise of excite and the related mailboxes. This is obviously easily done but I have just gone to register the new email address with ebay (as you are obviously required to do) and lo and behold !, they want my credit card number !!!. What on earth is going on, I
do not sell at ebay on this user name and I have good standing with plenty of good feedback. Would anyone else be deeply suspicious of why they should want your credit card number -- the moreso when they say that it is only for reference and they
of course would never use it unless you wanted to sell........

I think eBay wants a credit card number so they can reference it to determine if you are genuine and are an adult.
It is so easy to get an email address and play games with the bidding process, that eBay had to do something to try and stop nonsensical or whimsical bidding.
As a seller on eBay, I appreciate their efforts to maintain some control over the bidding process.

We have had one person who keeps appearing under one name after another. She bids thousands of dollars worth of merch up high and then is a no pay on most all of the bids. As sson as her negs get her suspended, she appears under a new name. If she had to give a credit card to bid, she would soon run out of aliases. Also it would really help if bidders had to post a credit card which would be used by eBay to collect when they don't pay. That would help everyone. Sellers would get paid, and ebay would get their fees.

Sounds like a great Idea until you find out Ebay could not enforce it. Besides, ebay is just a venue and they are not here to collect your money for you. Buyers would just do a charge back anyway.

I just started a new ID for buying and used Yahoo as my email addy. I was told that since I was using an "anonymous" email address I would need to list a credit card. I put my real name, my real address but since I used Yahoo for my email addy, I am "anonymous" I guess.
