Buyer purchased item for $0.01 (cost me $3.50). Description clearly states I ship USPS First Class for items under 1 lbs and shipping is flat $4.00. Buyer leaves a positive feedback saying S&H was high and actual shipping was $0.57. Her statement is entirely true, but I don't understand buyers who accept the terms but b|tch about it later. I left her a neg... Did I overreact? [ edited by sun818 on Dec 18, 2001 02:49 PM ]

"Did I overreact?"

Yes, big time.

Did she pay the correct amount? Yes.
Did she pay quickly? I assume Yes.
Did she leave you unfair feedback? No.
Did she say anything untrue? No.

She left positive feedback with a note you didn't like. Most customers don't read the text on positives anyway, so no big harm was done. You negative probably hurt the buyer a lot more than his comment hurt you.

You had probably better block this bidder from bidding on your future auctions. If I were him, I'd be looking for some kind of "revenge".

well, you asked...

As much as I understand what you are saying, this makes you look like the seller from hell.

Postage is .57¢, and your expenses are the remainder, that is not overcharging, that is business 101- charge enough to cover expenses involved with shipping, not just enough to cover USPS' expenses.

I wouldn't have left a neg, but since you did already, maybe it'll encourage the buyer to research the meaning of actual shipping, and not bid if she does not agree with the stated shipping fee.

If you want to get over the GUILT ( I assume you do), Just apologize and offer to pay the $15 (is it $15 or $25??) to have eBay remove the Negative (part of eBay's "How can we PROFIT from Feedback Removal" program). To be Honest you probably Overreacted, BUT I REALLY don't think it is That Big a Deal,UNLESS the Person you Negged had Perfect Feedback somewhere OVER 100.

Oh, I'm not guilty. I'm sure I'll get an undeserved neg in the future for this.

You screwed up badly. I suggest you get the neg removed at your own expense. The legit reasons for neg feedback would seem to me: buyer didn't pay, buyer failed to respond, buyer bounced a check, buyer strung you on and on with pathetic excuses.

The fact that you offered the item for a penny even though it cost you more does not enter into the equation at all. Getting a bargain off you is not grounds for more than grinding your molars.

The item was for sale, you sold it, the buyer paid for it and expressed an opinion that you charged $4 for postage and handling that seemed cost a good deal less was perhaps somewhat overzealous. Did you expect the buyer to be all greatful for getting a bargain?!

You're smokin' crack if you think I'm going waste $15 to go through a SquareTrade "mediation" to remove the neg. I don't mind if a buyer gets a bargain. It happens.

Yes. Previous buyer that won at $0.01 said:
"Great Seller, Fast Email, Fast shipping... A+++++++++"

There is a little thing in business called "HONESTY"!!!! If you need to charge a handling fee(which I feel should be part of the price-not the shipping) then be honest and put the handling fee in your auction. Don't try to hide it in the shipping. Buyers (contrary to popular opinion) are not that dumb. The buyer should have realized that the item didn't cost 4.00 to ship-that's their loss-however, leaving a negative because they expressed an "HONEST" opinion is just bad business. You sound as if the buyer should be happy because you hid handling charges in the shipping. Get a grip!! Either be honest about handling charges or learn to get over the fact that some buyers will actually be honest in their feedback. You brought this on yourself and leaving that person a neg was way out of line. I don't think you have to block the buyer because that person probably won't buy from you anymore. What a surprise!!!

sometimes "trigger finger" just happens. don't let it get you down though. just think of how many hours you'll have wasted thinking about 1 bad decision. i would rather spend my time thinking about other stuff than negative feedback (or the possibility of future negative feedback). learn & move on.

capolady - I'm not charging any hidden fees. My policies are clearly stated in the description. I'll e-mail them to you if you want to look at them.

"Hiding a handling fee" is no different than hiding your overhead in your price of item.

The buyer posted misleading information and paid the price with a neg. That's fair.

Oh sure, ms seller is so honest she HIDES her handling fee in the price of auction!!!

Honesty is not a factor as long as buyer knows total upfront. There's another thing in busiess called integrity. When you agree to the total, you don't complain afterwards.

Since the s/h was stated in the auction I think her complaint was unwarranted, however even in the title of your post you seem to have already realized that you overreacted. I think I would apologize to the buyer and move on. At least by saying you are sorry it might clear your conscience a bit and also if she replies to your neg then you can elect to post a follow-up below it (how about something like "harsh negative and I apologize" or something like that. The reason why you might want to do this is because in the future if a buyer looks up the feedback you have left for others they will see that even though you made a mistake you were willing to try and correct it. That is what is important at this point.

Personally I wouldn't pay squaretrade.
I would just apologize and do what I could to fix it underneath the feedback you left.

Good luck to you.
