My seller alter ego is listing a book on the life of Diana, POW. Thumbing through this tome I was struck by the gawkiness, frilliness and just plain silliness of the fashions the young POW affected before and just after her marriage. As part of the description, I typed, "Featuring dozens of photographs of clothes Di wouldn't be caught dead in today."
Oh, what the heck, I think I'll go ahead and use it anyway.

Give it the David Letterman test - if he would use it as a joke, it is ok. If even he would avoid the comment, well, expect a reaction.

Seriously, though, this alter ego has had some success with slightly unorthodox listings. My "Truly Revolting Rhinestone Cufflinks" brought $46.00 at auction. Maybe we're too afraid to offend bidders and take ourselves too seriously sometimes?

I have found that a bit of dark humor really sells... I have listed the Preppy Handbook many times, when I write the ad seriously I pull in $7-$10.00, when I use dark or "blue" humor it can go as high as $30.00-$40.00.
I search high and low for the most horrible and tacky items.. I love to sell them with the darkest humor possible! If I had to write dull and straight ads I would go crazy!

I had a god awful ugly jumper BIG BOLD BRIGHT floral print. I listed 2 times and said nothing about how ugly it was. I thought it would be something Mimi from Drew Carey would wear. So I listed it that way and sold it for 3 times my opening bid.
Selling plus size and big and tall men's clothing I usually write those boring, to the fact ads. But the Mimi outfit was fun and I laughed all the way to the bank!
