This is an excerpt from an email I got from SafeHarbor:

-----------------------------------------
However, your listing is in violation of eBay policy. We would like to take this opportunity to let you know what part of your listing is not permitted.

Your listing contains the following information:

"There are two third party credit hyperlinks for AuctionWatch, one which measures 321x21 pixels in size, exceeding the 88x33 pixels size restriction"

eBay does permit links which credit third parties for services provided in the listing. However, there are strict rules governing such links.
-----------------------------------------

The link in question is the AuctionWatch hit counter at the bottom of the page. When did AW hit counters start violating eBays rules?

I've asked them to provide specific clarification of the link in question to get them to explicit state it is the hit counter. I've also forwarded the above email to AuctionWatch customer support and will also forward eBay's response.

That's the problem with eBay. They have rules and a barrel full of monkeys to interpret them. Just depends on which misinformed temp worker happens to be looking at your auction at the time. Hopefully AW can get this resolved for you.

I guess it's my turn this week to be singled out for harassment by SafeHarbor. I'm just waiting for them to tell me the thumbnail link back to the full size image of my item is also an illegal link to AW.

Here's eBay's latest response:

--------------------------------------------
Thank you for taking the time to write in to eBay with your concerns.

I have reviewed your listings and found that a logo for your counter was
inserted by auction watch and is 321x21 pixels. Our policy states:

The use of counters must comply with these guidelines as well. If the
counter itself contains a credit to the company offering the service, it
must conform to our Third Party Credits guidelines. If the counter
itself does not contain a credit to the company offering the service,
there are no size restrictions. However, a logo or text used outside of
the counter to credit the service that provided it must conform to our
Third Party Credits guidelines.

Because the text is clickable along with the logo and they are 321x21 it
is oversized, and therefore a violation of the third party credits
policy.
--------------------------------------------
This sucks. All my current auctions have the counter in them. They're threatening to end my auctions.

I thought AW was a "preferred" provider with eBay...seems I remember then announcing that when they did away with universal search of eBay. Seems AW had to promise not to crawl eBay anymore in order to be preferred.

You'd think they would cut them some slack, or at least let AW know that they need to work on their counters and logos!!!

eBay has assured me that none of my current auctions will be ended due to the illegal AW counter link. They did warn me not to include the counter in any new auctions until AW resolves the problem. Meanwhile, AW customer support insists that the links follow eBay guidelines and are not in violation. Oh well...once again the little guy is caught in the middle. I guess I'll use invisible counters until this is resolved.

eBay forever changes the rules and third-party auction services cannot even hope to keep up with them.

Chances are very good that one of your competitors "turned you in" as eBay simply doesn't have the time to review all the auctions running.

This is one of the reasons to make very judicious use of third party vendors and for you to verify if what they are doing is ok. It's quite likely that almost anything they do might be considered suspect for some vague reason or another.

Visible auction counters are ugly and shouldn't be used anyway IMHO.

Ebay will always try to find ways to get rid of competiting service providers and PayPal-like competitors with it's BilkPoint service.
It's part of the game, a game that ebay always wins. Meg Gates Whitman at the helm.

eBay has been subtle with me. My AW counters simply don't happen.

I've started adding to my auctions: "Start price seeem a little higher lately? Blame eBay."

Now the shoe store that's been down the street for 20 years is folding. Do things suck that badly or is it a coincidence?

Feeling rather negative...

The last message I got from AW customer support is that the counters are compliance with eBay guidelines (even though I sent them a copy of an email from eBay explaining why they aren't).

You aren't the only one today being singled out. I list 57 auctions last thursday and friday. Ebay ended EVERY single one of them less than an hour ago and my bidding was just starting to get going. Their reason for doing so....I Use auctionwatch to list and have my storefront turned on. An ebayer can click the AW button and goto my gallery and on that page is an automatically included "join my mailing List" box. EBay says that I have violated ebays listing policies by collecting and databasing customer information. Which I have never had but ONE person bother with the thing and I don't bother with a mailing list anyway. There are millions of eBayers direct linking to there webpages to sell direct and that sort of thing. Why are they not policing that. I just want to pay my mortgage payment...not try to work around all of eBays quirks. This is getting ridiculious the way they are getting with those of us just trying to sell a few things here and there. I'm sorry your having the same aggrevations I'm feeling today. Hopefully they will leave the rest of teh auctionwatch community alone.

Hello tomservo92,

We have been in touch with eBay regarding this issue, and we have been assured that no auctions will be ended for counter violations. We are continuing to work with them in order to ensure that notices of this nature are not sent out to our customers, and also to ensure that no auctions are actually ended.

snackattack1,

I have responded in your thread - I am very sorry that your auctions were ended because of the email links. We have been assured in the past that the links are not in violation of eBay's rules and regulations. We are also working with them on this to prevent future occurrences.

Regards,

Diana
