Hi all:
I've recently been reading about PayPal and their "protection policies." After going over their terms of service, I can see how a chargeback can really screw us. They have so much lingo and so many loopholes I feel the seller won't have a chance to prove anything to them.
Therefore I'm stongly considering ending my PayPal use and going to another credit card / check processing company. Could any of you enlighten me on eBay payments as far as chargebacks and the ease of use for a new buyer who hasn't used their service before? Also do they verify addresses, etc?
I realize taking any form of payment other than money orders, etc includes a risk, but PayPal has so many stupid guidelines. Most of the items I sell are several hundred dollars each and if I did get cought up in the PayPal mess it would hurt me really bad.
One thing I don't like about PayPal and the seller protection policy is that you need to show them an ONLINE tracking statement with the address and signature. UPS doesn't even get signatures half the time and the post office charges an arm and a leg. Thats why I think they just pile up the terms so us, as sellers, don't have a chance in the long run.
Also the post office doesn't have "tracking" unless you use express mail, so who in the world is going to pay express mail charges on everything I sell!?!

Ebay payments (Billpoint) is run by Wells Fargo and is pure Credit Card. In the case of Fraud or chargeback, you are 100% liable, plus a $20.00 chargeback fee. No exceptions.
If you sell large ticket items, there is no protections, except money orders and cashiers checks. We live in a cosumer society and consumers are considered the wronged party until proven guilty. The only safe(r) way is to live in the same area so you can go small claims court.

Also, if you want to keep taking credit cards, be sure to send only to CC address. Also, get name of employer and call them and verify them.

My one and only chargeback was from Ebay Payments/Billpoint...They took extra money (fot their "fee"too...I refuse to use them at all, they were unreasonable and refused to even look at my proof of delivery.

I've just decided not to use PayPal myself anymore. Their track record (paypalwarning.com) is so poor. Even if they never treat me that way, I simply can't afford the risk.

By "safe" you mean the seller takes no risks.
That means the buyer takes the risks or finds a seller that offers the buyer more protection, and allows the buyer to pay from their computer without any added costs and speed up the delivery of their item.
When you stop thinking like a buyer it's time to stop selling. If you feel your buyers don't think or you offer something very unique then that doesn't apply to your business.
With PayPal's payment preferences options, confirmed billing address, and 5 day refund feature a savvy seller has some very good tools. Knowing how to use them is the key.
