I sold a $300+ baseball card on the 14th, and sent it out the 16th with insurance. They have contacted me saying they haven't received it ~ I'm in Oregon, they're in NY. Seems like I remember the PO saying if you get it insured, then it IS tracked. Is there any way I can find out where it is? Or is this even true? Kicking myself for not getting tracking, Sherah

Well, that USED to be true. I found it out by accident and it was helpful in a few instances. Unfortunately, the PO found out about their "glitch" and disabled the ability to track things using the insurance tracking number. This happened quite some time ago (9 months or a year, maybe?).

The good news is that even though you can't track it yourself through the USPS website, your postal clerk can check it out for you. Take your insurance receipt with you the next time you go in, and they can track it on their internal system. If they show it was delivered, get the time/date and let your buyer know. Perhaps someone else was home at the time and forgot to inform your buyer.

Good luck--I've had a couple of problems with getting PO reimbursement on damage.

(NOTE: The above info refers ONLY to the [blue] numbered insurance receipts. Insurance for items under $50 has never had any kind of tracking capability.)

Actually, in early November, the USPS started to scan all insured packages with a declared insured value of over $50.00. The receipt has a bar code and a tracking number on it and are supposedly trackable. I do not know if the tracking info can be retrieved from the website or you need to contact the post office direct. This info was given to me by the claims supervisor at my local P.O.

bkkofaz, I live in a large city, so we've had the over-$50 barcoded insurance receipts for several years now. They originally could be tracked through the USPS website (just like Certified Mail and Delivery Confirmation), but not any longer. The P.O. can track them, but you have to go into the post office to do that since it is currently trackable only on their in-house system.
