I purchased an old book yesterday, and am having trouble figuring out what it is.

I assumed it was in German, but when I put the title in the Alta Vista translator, it only gave me a partial translation.

wanderbuch fur die reife in die ewigkeit

translated as:

moving book fur the ripe into the eternity

It has a date of 1884, and has beautiful etchings in it of religious scenes.

I assumed it was a German Bible, but it doesn't seem to be laid out like a Bible would be.

Any thoughts as to what it might be?

"moving book fur the ripe into the eternity "

I don't know German, but if this was an episode of the twilight zone, I'd vote for "Funeral Instruction Manual"

Ha!

Check this link out. Hubby speaks a spattering of German, but he says it sounds more like a family history more than a Bible, what with the "moving book" and "eternity" in the translation.

Read down to the trunk. If there's an e-mail on the site you might be able to get some information about your book.

Try the book board on ebay ...
http://cgi3.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewBoard&name=books

Between the main posters to this board, they have a TON of knowledge, information and links between them and usually will respond quickly.

Could be Dutch, or it may be an older version of German that the automatic translators can't handle.

See...

That's why Transformational Grammar & Chomsky are so nice!

Ya don't have to worry: Is this a questions about an OLD BOOK? OR!!! Is this an OLD QUESTION about a book?

I always WORRY......

JinkiesVelma:

Thanks for the link. I found a correct translation:

"Travel book for the journey into eternity"

Now to figure out how much it is worth.....

Cut and paste your title into the Barnes and Noble out of print books section. They have two of them on that site.

I tried searching both the english and german versions of the title, and couldn't get a match.....

The correct title is:

Wanderbuch fur die Reise in die Ewigkeit

which translates to:

Travel book for the Journey into Eternity

Written by Franz Hattler

Published in 1884 in Duffeldorf

Includes 112 illustrations

I am still scratching my head as to what exactly it is, but it is definately religeous in nature.

You might try ABE's german website:

http://www.abebooks.de/

There appears to be a few copies of the book for sale there, along with other books by the same author. He definitely appears to have written about Christian/religious topics, and was possibly a minister of some denomination. Now you just need that utility that converts currencies to find out what those Euro's translate to in American dollars in order to get a ballpark idea of what the book might be worth.

BAM! You found it! Thank you very much! Apparently it is worth between $40-$60. Not bad for $15.00 investment.
