Has anyone else out there had any problems with "empty emails" lately? I mean an email with a subject and attachments? Nothing else? Lately I have rec'd several of these virus filled emails from various senders. I get 2-3 of them sometimes in one day! My Norton anti-virus has saved my computer, but I'm sure without it I would have been dead.
I did some research and was VERY suprised to see that they are coming from other Ebay sellers. People I don't know or have never dealt with. I don't even know how they got my email address as it is different from the one I use on Ebay.
I know that everyone's bids are down...but does that mean that some seller's see other seller's as the enemy? Have things deteriorated so much on Ebay that people have nothing better to do? Are they just trying to wipe out the competition or what?
In the past I have had a couple of scraps with certain Ebayers, but I would never do this to someone, even if they were the worst Ebayer ever. So why do this to complete strangers?
Anyone else out there have this problem? If so, perhaps we can compare notes on who these buyer's are...as I now know their identities and have reported them to Ebay and other internet authorities.

I have also been getting them. One day last week I had 12!
Someone posted an email address to a virus checking system and I have been forwarding them on. Everyone has a virus of some kind. I NEVER open an email with an attachment from anyone on my business email.
That email address to check the virus type and such is [email protected]

Thanks for the info Richie!
I have been chatting with other Ebayer's on the Ebay boards and have found that there is over 1800+ of us with these "symptoms". A great place for virus info and especially on this latest version of the KLEX virus checkout this link:
http://www.antivirus.com/pc-cillin/
There's alot of great info on what to do if you have been infected. It has also come to my attention that the email addresses that are being sent these virus emails are either from Ebay, Paypal, or Andale. These seem to be the common threads between them. Hope this info helps.

Every other email I've gotten in the last few days were viruses, and sent mostly from ebay Powersellers. The others were sellers, but the majority came from Powersellers.
Norton checks every email, and stops everything when one is caught. So I am virus free. I went and forwarded one back to one seller, who had sent me 3 in a row. And told him/her 'you best get an anti virus program'
Not nice, but I am really getting tired of it.
I don't know any of these sellers. I don't know if its ebay related or what. I have not bought anything from any, nor have they bought or bid from me.
its the klez one, same one everytime
not [email protected] or NearTheSea on ebay

We have been receiving about 8-10 a day! The klez one too. We have norton anti virus so they are cought each time.
How are these people getting my OLD e-bay address? (my home address) I changed email addys with ebay a couple months ago.
It is very upsetting to think someone is doing this intentionally trying harm other sellers.

I checked the message headers and found they are ALL originally from the same email addy!! Has anyone else checked the message headers? And yes this person is on E-bay! When i checked their feedback i found i was a buyer in march 2001 (old email addy) i also found the email addresses of the inserted headers in this persons feedback!!
So the email looked as though it was coming from other people when all the time it was the same one. If anyone finds out anything let me know.

Chill out. These viruses are automatically sent out in emails by the virus itself. The sender is not trying to harm you, in fact the sender has been infected and doesn't even know the emails are being sent from their account.
There has been a rash of virus emails lately because of a new type of virus (klez). In klez the recipient doesn't have to open the attachment to get infected, all that's required is to look at the email. Looking at the email header title in your email list will not release the virus.

I have received the kleg virus with a notification from Norton that the file cannot be repaired amd quarantine is strongly recommended.
(W32.klez.gen@mm
Although the email or the attachment is unopened, a file is always damaged and cannot be repaired..
How can an unopened email spread the virus? I keep the virus definitions current. Should I change my anti virus program?
And one other question...After the damaged file is quarantined should the file be deleted?

Helenjw,
The virus cannot affect you if you don't open the email. It can affect you if you open the email to read the message, even if the attachment is not opened. How it does this is complicated but it has to do with an intentionally incorrect mime header.
Yes, delete a possibly infected file when you find it. That eliminates the risk of opening is accidentally.
Also, do not set your mail program to automatically open up the latest message. Otherwise you are doomed.

pelorus...I've discovered a new way to delete all messages without opening by clicking on edit, then select all and then delete. Maybe that will work. Thanks for your answer!
The one email that I thought was the culprit had not been opened or viewed and I never open attachments.

Yep ~ I am also getting them .. all have that file attachment ... got 2 yesterday and one today.
I do not open any email with file attached...I always delete them...unless i know it is someone responding to my AW notice link... I use Outlook Express and just go to tool bar up top and click message... block sender and they are out of here !!
And if AW doesn't get rid of this anoying blinking ad at the top of this page .... it is making my curser jump ... making me friggen sea sick !!!

Yes, I was getting several a day. They look like they're from different senders, but all from same source. Putting them on my block list didn't help because it came through with a different name each time. The Norton Virus program seemed to be doing it's job until I right-clicked to delete the virus e-mails. I found out it was adding attachments to my outgoing mails. My husband formatted the hard drive and reinstalled everything. One file was corrupted, so we deleted it. He downloaded some kind of program off the net designed especially for Klez. So far so good. My e-mail is now set not to open e-mails automatically.

This is not an exaggeration...I have had a continuous internet connection since 1993....NEVER had a virus or worm and DO NOT use virus software...I get the KLEZ and other nasties in my in-box from my friends, happily open them, read their silly code and then toss them in the trash, untouched...I email, I bank and pay bills exclusively online, I surf and download, I file my taxes and keep my household and business accounts, I store and manipulate photos, graphics and audio files, I create powerpoint presentations and excel database files and send them to others, I create Portable Document Format files and write web pages for myself and others...these viruses are not going away, they will get worse...........there really and truly is a very simple solution.....

profe51: You said it, but that would involve breaking out of groupthink, doncha know.
I don't own any anti-virus software, but I'm usually the first to inform my customers that their machines are infected.

yup,...you ask them "why did you buy a win-doze machine?" and you get the same old tired answers:
all my friends have one ...(misery loves company)
I have one at work (and I just love bringing my job home so I can work for no pay)
I heard apple's going broke..(been hearing this since 1989,.. with 6 billion in cash reserves, how long does it take the only computer company to declare a profit in the last 2 quarters to go broke?)
apples are expensive...(so are BMW's, the point?)
you cant get software...(really? Microsloth Office 2000 for windows replaced the ill fated office98, which came out very late and was quickly pulledbecause it was so buggy, meantime, office98 for mac was out in 98 on time, and clipped along quite well until 2000 for mac replaced it)
there are no good games...(I thought that's what playstation and nintendo were for, my mistake)
ad nauseum..................
"I don't own any anti-virus software, but I'm usually the first to inform my customers that their machines are infected......"
I keep sending out polite emails to people...."this file is a virus (or worm) you sent me, even tho we don't know each other and you didn't know you sent it..dont feel bad, it didnt hurt my machine, but please check yours"
sorry for the length....but I'm sure the other 95% of us will indulge a few die-hard, crazy-eyed crackpots who refuse to abandon a sinking ship......
nope...no viruses here......

First I had...
1) My Atari 400 (it sucked!)
2) My Atari 800 (it sucked!)
3) My Texas Instruments (IT sucked!)
4) My Tandy Color (It sucked!)
5) My Commodore 64 (It sucked!)
Then I spent REALLY BIG MOOLA on my dream PC:
1985 Apple IIc and...IT REALLY SUCKED!
The moral of this story? I don't know jack-dodo about PCs!
