I've read other threads where people use someone elses computer and then get suspended. I don't quite understand how an IP address works, but it was my impression that the supspensions had something to do with the IP address being different on different computers.

My ISP was taken over by another company and they had me change the settings in my computer.

When I was looking around their website I found the following notice-

"IP Address--I-2000 uses dynamic IP addressing (NOTE: if fixed IP addressing is needed please contact our office) when computers connect to our facilities. Therefore select "Obtain an IP Address Automatically" if asked during setup. If an IP address in needed then enter 0.0.0.0 or 255.255.255.254"

I don't know much about computers or the internet work, but I assume this means whenever I log on I get a different IP address.

Is this normal? Or will this cause problems with ebay and paypal in the future?

dynamic IP address, which is one that changes each time you dial up, is normal for most dial up ISP's....it wont affect Ebay or other websites you visit....

Most ISP's have tech support why not call them and ask them. You are paying for that service and they sure know alot. I call often when I have problems or questions.
I think when we talked about other users on the computer it has to do with cookies.

Greatlakes - whatever got those users suspended, it wasn't using a different computer. I do ebay from work, from home and even at my parents house without any problems.

I'm betting they were suspended for using the other peoples user ids, not their computers. The owner of the computer was using the "keep my signed on..." option and the visitor bid on items using the computer owners id.

But I'll answer your question anyway;

You must have an IP address to be able to use the internet at all. There are two "types" of IP addresses, static and dynamic.

Permanent websites like eBay, Auctionwatch, and any other website use static IP's. That how your computer knows where to look for stuff. This IP number never changes (static), and is USUALLY ties to a domain name like www.auctionwatch.com.

Most ISP's use dynamic addresses for normal users like you and me. We don't need a permanent address, and in fact it's more secure for people NOT to know our addresses (Hackers). This number is different every time you dial in or connect to your ISP.

Unless you are running some kind of internet server software (Web server, FTP site, etc) you don't need a static IP number.
