I bought some teaspoons nicely wrapped in their pouches. They are marked r&b a1 or aI. Can anyone tell me if they are worth anything or what the markings mean? Thanks!!

Pics aren't necessary. A1 is the designation for silverplate.

Only worth something if the pattern is highly collectible. Most silverplate patterns are not.

"r&b" is probably "Reed & Barton".

And I have had silverplate go for more than sterling, so it just depends.

Again, without a pattern name, or a pic, we can't be much help.

You may get some pattern ID help, now that you have the picture, from a silver replacement service or try Reed&Barton.com (might work!). Good luck.

parkman-I think your image UBB didn't work because you forgot to put the backslash [/img] in the closing one. You have both showing as [img].

I bought a huge set of plate at an estate sale and could not sell it as a whole set.
however I had people e-mailing me for just the dessert spoons or just the serving spoons and have sold about half the pieces for much more than what I was asking as a set!

On old silverplate the mark R&B is for Rogers and Brothers. The old Reed & Barton plate mark is Arnbee. The R&B mark was finally bought by Reed & Barton in the 1970's. I don't find this pattern in Hagen, though it appears to be from the 1920's neoclassical styled ones. There are dozens of patterns that look like this.

Also, almost everything is worth more if you take it apart and sell it bit by bit. That's how junk yards stay in business. Just a question of how much patience you have.

Thanks for the help. I have 6 sets like the one pictured. The person I bought it from said it was used in an art museum in Ohio..but then...who knows. I thought I would try selling it a set at the time..I also got some more pieces from this same estate sale and a couple of them are marked sterling so hopefully will make a buck or two on it. You are right about splitting things up..I have done that with some sets of china and made a lot more than I would have selling it as a set.
