You are only half right. All packages up to 6 lbs. have the same rate for all zones. That is 1 lb. is $3.50, 2 lb is $3.95, 3 lb is $5.20, 4 lb is $6.45, & 5 lb is $7.70 for all 8 zones, after that it goes up by zones for each increase in weight. I am taking this directly from Postal Bulletin PB 22075 issued 5/2/02.

what about the insurance rates? are those changing as well?
and also, how does one tell which zones are 1, 2, or 3 or whatever?

sanmar, you're quoting the current rates. As of June 30, all Priority Mail over one pound will be zoned. Shipping costs to zones 1-3 will actually go down a bit in most cases, but the higher zones will skyrocket in cost. You should really take a look at the link to the table I posted above so you aren't hit with sticker shock when you ship packages in a couple weeks.

The current rates are up to 5 pounds, not 6 (80 ounces) - go to 80.1 ounces, and you are zoned. I know, I sent something that was 80.1 - I went in and removed a tiny amount of packaging to get it to 79.9 and saved $3.
