I've got a set of 6 what-I-think are "berry bowls"...There are no marks on the bottom. They were a wedding gift to the mother of an elderly friend of mine...1919. They're "footed" and seem to be hand-painted. Can anyone help with identification...maker/pattern, etc? Thanks for assistance!

You are asking for the almost impossible. You might try sending your pics to Replacements Ltd. They might be able to help you. Without any type of mark, I haven't a clue. I deal in china & run into this problem constantly. I am guessing they came from Europe, but who made them is anyone's guess. Send your pictures to [email protected], they might be able to ID this, but don't count on it.

My experiences in the past have shown that fellow AW-ers are masters at the "impossible"...so I still have hope that some astute porcelain person out there will immediately recognize this pattern! However, thanks for suggestion and I did post the photos to "supplier"...Appreciate your suggestion!

If you don't get an answer here, you can try the Antique Week "What in the world is it?" forum:

blueyes29.

You said the footed bowl set was given to an elderly friend in 1919. You need to determine if the set was given new, or if it was given as an antique.

If the set was new in 1919, the hand painting may have been done by a lady in the Woman's Art Movement, obviously someone with a bit more talent than most. If so, the American ladies who painted fine china preferred to paint Limoges china more than other blanks. I refer you to any of the books in the series by Mary Frank Gaston titled Collector's Encyclopedia of Limoges Porcelain and you will see similar bowls shown in those books.

Thanks...The set was given to the mother of my friend...She doesn't know but I suspect the set was new when it was given. My local library doesn't have a very extensive collection of books...but I'll see if I can find the one mentioned. Again, appreciate the help and guidance!

Hello:

Could be unmarked Nippon. Look under Nippon and you will see others that are similar.
