Here is the deal - Mom and Dad both worked for Coca Cola Atlanta in the 1940's and 1950's. The leftover trays were freely given to the employees and my parents got perhaps 50-60. Mom had this great idea to paint them all gloss black and embellish them with gold decals.

I have ruined two trays trying various methods (steel wool, paint removers, cleansers, even oven cleaner). It seems to me there ought to be a way to remove the sprayed on paint without removing the coke design underneath. Any ideas on what I could try?

Take one more tray for a test tray. Try Goo Be Gone on 25% and see what happens. It remove decals stickes etcooff of paint and MAY loosen top without damaging bottom paint. Try Freezing or try heat.(Oven) Sometimes that will work. It is trial and error. Others may have better ideas. Good luck...

Goobgone is great stuff & will take off the decals, but I don't think it will remove paint. Try putting one in the dishwasher & running 2-3 cycles of strong detergent& hot water. Who knows it might work. Rots of Ruck

The decals are not a problem, the paint is.

I had thought (hoped) the original Coke design might have been baked on and someone here might have a secret to share. I guess I will continue to have plenty of serving trays for picnics like the upcoming 4th.

Thanks

Try a soak in a strong solution of very hot water and TSP. Straight, pure TSP you can get at the paint store.

Watch carefully so you catch it at the right time. You *may* be able to rinse off the paint without damaging what's underneath.

I've used this method to take layers and layers of paint off of house hardware (hinges and such) It seems to take the paint off one layer at a time.

Hope it works! Let us know if you succeed.

Lucy

Edited to add: As Dacreson suggested, try it on part of a tray first. Submerge some of it, let the other part stick up out of the solution. That way you have some left to try other things on...

Hi Benny,

The brand I bought is made by Synko, it's in a 16 oz carton, like a small milk carton. Yellow label w/red and black writing. Says TSP concentrated tri sodium phosphate. It only cost a couple bucks...

Lucy

Editing to add... Make it strong! I used about 1/2 cup to a pint of water.
