Is anyone else getting a lot of emails with the Klez virus?

I stopped selling from Memorial Day through the 4th of July and since I've started selling again I've been getting a lot of infected emails. Before Memorial day I was getting 1 or 2 infected emails a week. I just checked the emails that Norton's quarantined and I counted 14 infected emails in the last 5 days, including 6 in one day.

I emptied my quarantine about 3 months ago and since then the only virus I've received have been the Klez virus.

Yep, this virus gets sent to us about 10 times a day. It's been around for a long while and shows no signs of slowing down.

Just got one this morning, I feel sorry for those who do not have Virus protection.

Actually it may be those we have to thank for the proliferation of this virus. As I understand it, the virus infects your computer, then attaches itself to your address book and emails itself to everyone on the list. If some folks are using Outlook's default, they save every incoming email address. So, all their Ebay communication whether buying or selling, all those folks email addresses are in their address book. This is why it continues because your address may be in tons of lists if you trade a lot on ebay. Then if they send one of those joke spams to all the names on their list the count quickly multiplies. It just keeps going and going.

Does anyone know if this virus does real damage, i. e. destroy files etc?

Yes, for the past few days it has been relentless. I looked at the headers and the return path is to a buyer I sold to in February 2002. But, the "sender" is another seller on eBay with whom I have not dealt, but who my buyer has. I wrote to both of them to give them the heads up, and ask them to check their machines.

My Norton software subscription ends in 2 weeks, so I'm updating ASAP.

They call it relatively innocuous. Well I think I saw an estimate that it is now something like 20% of all emails.

is this virus in an attachment? my sister sent me one of those annoying chain jokes and then i received 3 more emails from her, all with no attachments but no subject. i never never open attachments and have my email waiting 20 seconds to open.

I also clean my address book every other month or so. I delete all but family and friends addresses from my book. At least that way if I get a virus I won't be passing it on to all of my buyers.

The virus is in an attachment. The subject line is one of 10 or more "canned" phrases. Junk like "thinking of you" etc. Many times you will get a message like this with no attachment because an ISP server might have stripped out the virus. The thing is that the "sender" more than likely is NOT the sender. So calling the person up and "warning" them is useless. The virus was sent by a person who has the SENDER's address in THEIR address book. The best thing is to use a program like Spam Punisher to send a message to the message originator's ISP.

For more than you ever wanted to know about this beserker virus:

http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/[email protected]

I have neighbors who use a shared AOL account. It took 6 hours to fix the laptop; but it took going back to the intallation disks to get the workstation back to normal.

If you didn't use an anti-virus software before you got this virus, and you try to install one, the install will fail. The virus redirects all attempts to get rid of it. Real nasty razzafrazza.

Anyone who gets on the Internet for any reason, even to email your kids, should have an antivirus. It is the cheapest $30.00 bucks I ever spent. I"m with you Jack, If everyone had a good antivirus such as McAfee or Norton, it would cut our troubles tremendously.

WHY ARE THERE MORE HORSES AS**S THAN THERE ARE HORSES???/

I just got an email from "semsick" and in the subject line it said "Klez Virus Immunity". I didn't open it, but wonder if it was the virus itself. Anyone know?

Just got an email from lmmpkj. It was a Klez virus. I noticed that it was 127KB. I have 2 email addresses & this is the first one to my personal address that I do not advertise anywhere. I use it for personal use with friends & family. I have had several on my business address & Norton has always quarantined them. Thank goodness for Norton. As a rule if I get an email that is over 100KB I delete it without opening it. I learned sometime ago that all of them have Klez.

The "Klez Virus Immunity" email is the Klez virus.

Not only does it pull email addy's out of your address book, but it also searches all documents on your computer, and pulls any email addresses it finds, and sends it there as well.

To print your address book, open your address book then chose File in the upper left corner, click that and you will get a drop down box then click print and your address book will be printed to a hard copy.

To delete your address book, go to outlook express. At the top of the page on the left upper corner is edit. Click that, then select all and that will highlight everyone in your address book. in your browser right click and you will get a drop down box then click delete and it's gone to your recycle bin, then just delete the recycle bin.

Open up your Norton file from the lower right portion the task bar. It is a small monitor. Click that and it will open your Norton. The first page up has the options that you want to activate. Put a check mark in all of the round circles. Norton will scan you computer automatically.

I hope this helps.

I was getting snowed under with klez emails so I started really fighting spam. I now clean my cookies every night before I turn the computer off and report every spam to spamcop.net. It is a free service, but they do encourage you to sign up for other things. My email problems are 10% of what they used to be in only a month.

Okay - don't know what's happening.

I mentined in an earlier post that I got an email yesterday re: Klez Virus Immunity, and deleted it unopened.

Rewassago says it was the virus itself.

I don't keep an address book.

Earlier today my Hotmail Inbox was normal; suddenly some of the "froms" are showing my name instead of the senders'.

Question #1 - Did I avoid the virus by not opening the email, or did it get to me anyway?

Question #2 - Can this thing in Hotmail be a form of the virus, or is it just another of their temporary glitches?

Question #3 - What is the address fot the place that will clean a virus on the spot (and it isn't Symantec)?

If you answer all three questions, you get three huge thank yous!

Question #2 Could be a glitch

ZoneAlarm is designed to help keep hackers and other snoops out of your computer. It will not stop the Klez virus so you will need an antivirus such as Nortons for that. Nortons seems to be the best one on the market.

What Klez does is pull YOUR email address off of someone elses computer, and places it in the FROM: line.

If you are getting these bounced emails, they are possibly not even coming from your computer, but rather someone else's infected computer.

Klez will also send FAKE bounced email notices to you, containing the Klez virus.

Just deleting your address book will not stop this virus. It will search every document on your computer, and pull EVERY email address it finds.

If you are receiving them in Hotmail, you do not have it on your computer, unless you are having all your Hotmail mail sent to Outlook. If not, the email you are reading is not on your computer, but rather on the Hotmail server.

Zone Alarm is a wonderful firewall program. I used to use it on my computer (till I got a new one). It takes some time to set up, but once it is, it works like a charm.

I just installed the free version of ZoneAlarm on my new computer and it only took a couple of minutes to download and set up. They make it very easy to do.

If I only use Hotmail and Yahoo e-mail and don't use Outlook, am I safe from the Klez virus? I do not open any attachments on e-mails and I do not open spam e-mail and delete them.

If you are opening your email on the yahoo server (by logging on to www.hotmail.com), you are safe from the virus. You could even click on the attatchment, and it wouldn't download. That is one of the nice things about web-based email systems.
