Here is a great article from MSNBC about the rising problem of fraud. This could also be a good reason that online sales are at their slowest in years.

Thanks for the thread.. as much as I would not like to hear of the fraud because I feel it hurts all our sales, I want to be informed. I do think that eBay really needs to step it up a bit. It isn't helping them one little bit to run those auctions and they are easy to spot. But so many new people to eBay have no clue that they are bidding on a fraudulent auction. I mean it isn't like ebay is going to get paid their fees from the people who are running them so why don't they protect their buyers and in turn it protects those of us who are legit and trying to run a business.
It is a lot to think about... unfortunately I haven't had my first cup of coffee

Although clueless newbie bidders are a part of the problem, I think that ebay's "we are only a venue" attitude actually promotes this kind of thing. Reading through the article, Mr. Carr states that he regularly turns in auctions that appear to quite obviously be scams, yet ebay takes no action and does not pull them. Instead they point to their out of date statistic of one tenth of one percent of auctions being scams or frauds.
I know it may be asking too much for a billion dollar corporation to take personal responsibility for what goes on and for how people are trying to use their website, but if con artists keep going like this and ebay does nothing about it, they will be cutting their own throats. One would think that with the amount of revenues at stake for ebay, they would be more proactive on cracking down on fraud.

I'm wondering if the fraud cases are increasing because there is a rise in hothead buyers who can't wait ten days for their item to arrive.
Online fraud still only represents less than .01% of all transactions so sales aren't hurting from that. Online sales are at its low because all retail sales are low. It's the economee stoopid.

That's probably the reason they don't have Safe Harbor anymore. Two many complaints and not willing to do anything about it. That is quite an article. Open's your eyes to how deviate we are getting. Anyway to get money and not work for it. Wouldn't you think that eBay loses a lot of money on that also. Also when someone new lists items like that, you would think it would send a red flag to the billing department at eBay and they would look into it. Maybe it's time a class action law suit is started against eBay. They probably are protectedin some way but it would open the eyes of the public to be more caution in their buying habits. I have no idea why anyone would buy computer products on ebay anyway. Maybe it is a little cheaper but a face to face transaction is better than an email - email. I think everyone wants a laptop so that along with their cell phone they can sit at the breakfast table and do their business. The world is becoming a strange place. I hope they ban cell phones in public places soon, how I hate to be shopping and hear that stupid music coming from someones hip. Especially restaurants.

Do you think this guy fits the profile of a scammer? - Item # 1369483766. Gotta love his TOS though! Check out his feedback...pretty bizarre

I checked out the item number. WOW, how could he contine to sell with feedback like that. I also check on some of the people that left feedback for him and found that he doesn't leaves any feedback for anyone.
Would it help this problem if ebay encouraged people to leave feedback. Maybe just a simple reminder to do so. I have talked to a few other sellers, they say that they have sold more than double the amount of feedback they have.
