Just hooked up my scanner and used it for close-ups of tags, fabric swatches, and books. Excellent compared to my camera.

I don'tsell jewelry as a rule, but I have on occasion & can get great pics with my camera. It has Zoom & Wide angle feature. The zoom really works well for closeup. I can get equivilant to 3 inches whis is really close.

My trusty Sony Mavica takes super close-up pictures of jewelery and such. I LOVE MY SONY MAVICA!

The zoom on a digital camera helps. Normally you might use a very low camera resolution with larger objects but for small pieces of jewelry you should try a much higher resolution.

Please scanning experts- what resolution? I love my zoom on the camera but I can not get a decent scan of jewels--
instructions for dummies? I bought the scanner thinking it would be quicker then messing with lighting but geez, they are blurred, dark, no detail

example

Thanks I have asked for a lot of help lately and you are all so great!!

The scanner programs have all types of protocals and settings for resolutions.
I use the Photo Express program and use the 75 DPI setting and try to never have a scan over 50K.
added:

Sometimes a sheet of white paper laid over the same items makes them look better than the natural dark background.

Hi Dye

I agree that a white paper or a light colored cloth draped over the jewelry will usually make a difference in the photos.

Hi Kiara and Bids
I will give the paper a try I know I did that once before but will try again and see...

Next question- how do you keep the bytes down on a scan? sometimes it's fine sometimes it's not.

Geez I feel stupid lately I ask questions all the time HEY LURKERS join in and ask I know this stuff helps you too and the posters here will get tierd of just helping me!

Hi again Dye

Didn't you get some instructions with the scanner? Most do come with a program where you can downsize your pic, make it lighter or sharpen the image.

I can easily transfer mine over to my picture program and do the same thing. And do try draping a white or ivory cloth over the jewelry as many times it creates excellent results.

I have a Sony Mavica FD73 and the Zoom feature makes it very easy to get excellent close-up pics of the jewelry. I prefer it to my scanner.

If you didn't get a picture program with your scanner I think there are some free ones on the net and maybe someone else can help you with that. Good luck!

I recently purchased a Minolta DIMAGE S404 For a great price at a fundraiser auction. I had been using Mavica FD73, The Minolta does far better quality photos in general but has problems with super close up pics. The Mavica for auctions where the photos can't be that large and I need super close ups is definitely the best. Sometimes most expensive highest quality item is not the best for the job.

You can see my auctions seller ID JRB3 to see what I mean.

I have quit scanning pictures and bought a FD Mavica and my jewelry pictures are beautiful. It was well worth the price I paid as I have sold many more items. Using this Mavica takes half the time to take the pictures than a scanner. I always use a light colored cloth behind. Sometimes I have to adjuct the brightness or enhance the color but very seldom. My ID is bracelet and I have some beautiful jewelry on and I used a white linen behind the jewelry this time. I have many different color background cloths and I try quite a few before I decide which one I like. Sometimes the color of the jewelry makes a difference to what color background you use. I think the new scanners are really bad and their photo editing program is even worse. They put the cheapest one they can find with it. I know how frustrated you are. I have Photosuite as my editing program and I really like it.

I put items like that in a large white tube with a hole cut in the center just big enough for the camera lens. I use two remote flash units thru diffusers at each end of the tube.

Tough job photographing jewelry, but you need to keep experimenting till your satisfied. I believe the results seriously affect your bids and prices.
