I'm trying to reduce the file size of my jpegs. I've tried reducing the resolution on the software that came with my camera with no luck at all. Therefore, I'm considering buying a compression utility program.

I know absolutely nothing about compression utilities - anyone have any suggestions as to which program is easy to use and good?? Thanks!

I would recommend using Paint Shop Pro for this. You can download a 30 day free trial from JASC software at http://www.jasc.com/download_4.asp? When you save a JPEG with Paint Shop Pro, you can specify the amount of compression to reduce the files size.

Ulead's PhotImpact has a nice resolution reduction application.

Twinsoft recommended irfanview and it works great. There is a free download here:

I use IrfanView quite possibly the best freeware on the internet, definitely in the top 5. A terrific program that's worth a bundle, but it's free.

Thanks for your quick responses!

Oh my gosh!! I have InfraView. I looked all over and couldn't find a compression or file size reducing function. Where is it???

Look at the top 15 windows downloads from Tucows. IrfanView has been #1 for a long time, even over some recognized software necessities.

Open your picture with IrfanView, then click on the 'Save', this time look at the 'options' button in the save window. I save mine at about 60 - 70% quality, it really reduces the size.

In Irfanview you can also use the resize feature -- that way the compression stays the same and makes for a clearer picture but you can make it smaller. I use a Sony Mavica and then reduce photo's to 75 or 80%.

Go to image and then click on resize. What I love about Irfanview is the way you can resize by telling it a % of the original size. I rename and resize before uploading all my photo's.

Thanks, uaru - your directions were perfect but when I tried to import it into my B-drive where I keep my pictures, I get "unknown file format". I saved it in JPG - any ideas?? Auyone?

lindajean - I also use sony mavica. Are you saying that you are reducing the actual size (w x h) in the sony software then importing the smaller pic into infraview to reduce the compression?

No, I save the pics on my hard drive because I like to rename them anyway. I use my own inventory numbers for my items so I can keep track of them through several ebay numbers if it takes more than one listing.

By using the same inventory number for the photo I know at a glance what I can delete safely in the photo file. When I rename it I also resize it -- all through Irfanview.

I like the 80% of original size. And, I always leave the save at 100% compression to get crisp clear images -- I just cut back by reducing overall size.

You did it! I finally got it

I save photos on a zip drive in my B-drive. I am getting the "unknown file format" when I reduced compression in InfraView, saved it to B-drive then tried to open it in my sony photo software so I could finish enhancements. I guess I don't have to do that - I'll have to play around with cropping, etc in InfraView.

Anyway, I got one auction listed with 3 pictures that have really small file sizes.

Thanks to everyone.

Paint Shop Pro works great. Another thing you can do with it is there is a function where you can copy the area you with to use and cut out the rest. When you copy the area you want, then all you do is repaste the section you want and it makes a new image the is much smaller in the bytes used. Doing this, you can also edit out much of the background that you do not really want in the photo as well.
