I'm curious. The post office rules state that magazines cannot be mailed media rate, due to their advertising they have to go parcel post.

Is anybody actually mailing them that way?

I've been selling quite a few magazines lately including some large lots. Due to their weight, parcel post costs alot, and I am getting requests from the bidders on almost every auction to have them mailed media rate.

How do you handle this. It kind of reminds me of international bidders asking sellers to enter a lower amount on the customs form.

Your post office is technically correct - magazines should go bound printed matter but a lot of post offices just send them media.

At the USPS site you can read about bound printed matter. People that buy magazines definately want bound printed matter or media.

Well, according to my post office they are technically not allowed under bound printed matter either.

Well unless you are insuring them, what the post office don't know won't hurt them.

If you are insuring, best to do the proper thing.

I tried to cut and paste the Bound Printed Matter section here but couldn't get it to work. Go to www.USPS.com and then to Domestic Rates and Fees. Bound printed matter is definately for magazines. (advertising and staples or bound) I have had this confirmed by my post office. But like I said they just usually send them at Media Rate. Take a copy of the Bound Printed Matter section with you to the post office.

Bound printed matter is the correct class. Note, however, that if something mailed BPM is undeliverable, the USPS will not return it to you. That's why it's so cheap.

I use Media Mail for books even when BPM is cheaper for just this reason.
