Funny~I was going to post this topic yesterday !
Gees.... what the heck happened?
The last 3 weeks have been GREAT for my ebay sales, just like the old days of ebay but starting middle of last week things have slowed down BIG TIME .. almost to a complete stop !
Do you think it has anything to do with The Sniper, that maybe most ebayers are sitting watching CNN all night?
NOT gina50 on ebay

One Word: BASEBALL!!!
90% of my customers are men and I'll bet that most of them are watching Baseball during the time when I get the most bids.
Why do I say this? Because during the lull in games between the Playoffs and the Series, sales skyrocketed....and I mean skyrocketed......most of my sales this the last week or so, have come on days when there haven't been games on --- or after the games end.
Still, I'm going to trounce September's Numbers, so I'm not that upset.

OH YEAH! A similar thread went around a few weeks ago...I was hoping then that it was a VERY temporary thing, but sadly, there has'nt been a turn around (for me) yet.
I sell primarily OLD, ANTIQUE and VINTAGE items. I start at a low opening bid, no reserve, actual shipping / no handling fees...
In a normally good month I might have one or two items in my "unsold" columns, I now have 13!!!! and it's not even the end of the month. I am not alone, Everyone I speak to who also sells old stuff on ebay has been asking "WHAT'S UP"!?!?! I have about 40 of my favorite sellers bookmarked, sellers who stock items similar in style to mine. With the exception of one or 2, they are all fairing poorly. The postal rate increase really hurt my sales, many of my old customers are on the west coast, I am on the east coast... I can't believe how much shipping costs went up. I felt a lull a few months ago...back in June I think, and I rented a space in a nice, bright , clean co-op, nice low rent too. I'm so glad I did!
So far October has been a great month at the co-op. I feel I am still ahead of the game!

Most of my buyers are women so I don't think that Baseball is the only reason
Besides that ~ I usually end my auctions earlier as I have always done, so that would be before the games start
I also charge low shipping. At first the postal increases hurt me but not in the last 8 weeks or so!
I have excellent 1600+ positive feedbacks & 0 negs

Of the last 100 auctions that closed, I had 100 sales. That's (sorry to state the obvious) 100% sellthrough.
It's usually more like 92% to 96%.
I am also getting many more bids per item. This is probably due to the three bidders I referenced in another thread ( "Bidder wants me to eliminate her competition" ).

I really believe that it depends on what you are selling. What is the demand for your product? How do your prices compare with local shops? There is a whole lot more to selling than just putting something on eBay. I have had great sales over the past month. Mainly because of what I have had to sell, i.e. Lenox & Minton china. Response has been terrific. Minton soup bowls, put on at $19.95, going off to night @ over $31.00 each. I have other items on too, but not getting the sales from them as from the china.

I guess it is just me then. I am having my best month ever. And that is well over 3 years of online selling. That includes both ebay and Yahoo. Although, I have found listing item during sporting events seems to be better. They guys are watching there sports and the sporting widows are online looking for bargains. I hope things pick up for the rest very soon.

Yes, sanmar,I definately agree with you there. Congratulations on your brisk china sales!
The Holidays are coming...people are looking towards Thanksgiving for table settings, etc.
and Christmas and Hanukah for entertaining and gifts: electronics, clothing, jewelry....not necessarily Antiques, which is what I sell.
I usually do shut down my ebay sales towards the end of November through December, because sales are soooooo slow. This is just much earlier than usual! Considering everything that this past year has brought, maybe everyone is being a bit more...cautious and less impulsive with their purchases.

All of the china I have been selling is more modern, Minton "Bellemeade" A soup bowl just closed @ $40.00!! But this is nothing compared to the Royal Crown "Traditional Imari" that I sold about a year ago. Also sellinh Lenox "Golden Wreath" Beautiful China. Getting ready to list some old Spode "Buttercup" Hey, as far as the weather, it has been downright chilly for this time of the year. Highs in the low 60's where it should be over 70. Oh well, it isn't snowing. I had enough of that when I lived in Minnesotas & So.Dak.

Maybe it's your ad layout or something. I have been listing some antique dishes from pre WW 1 and they didnt sell at all. HUMM Maybe I should try more recent stuff and see what happens. You know, some big names that are "non antiquey"
Yeah it's in the 50's here in SF. BRRR but I REFUSE to turn on the heat yet.

I think anyone that has good sales now either has rare items or are selling them cheaper than they can be found off eBay. I had some rare items that did very good this week, but the items that are not hard to find I can do just as well or better selling at the local flea market for CASH.

That would be us.
I don't know of any "real-world" store that sells what we sell as cheaply as we sell it. With brick and mortar overhead, I don't think it would be possible.
I can do just as well or better selling at the local flea market for CASH.
I'll leave you to it, then. eBay has spoiled me tremendously; I can no longer accept the notion of getting up at 3 am, unloading the truck in the dark, having people paw through my boxes of unmarked goods while I'm trying to set up, etc.
I'll stay home in my jammies and have a hot cup of chai tea.

I guess flea markets in my area must be better than others. Last Sunday I left home at 7:30 am NO one touched my stuff untill it was on the table for sale (of course I priced it when packing) and I was home at Noon. I took in $600.00 in cash. My total expenses were $2.00 in gas and $5.50 for the space at the flea market. Much cheaper than eBay fees.
I still love eBay for some items but cheap and common belong at the flea market as far as I am concerned.

(laughs) Yeah, I guess flea markets are a bit different here. The only market worth doing is in full swing by 5:30 - 6:00 am. If you arrive at 7:30 am I don't think the gate checkers will let you in; it's too hazardous to have moving vehicles maneuvering among the crowds.
As for home by noon...sellers aren't allowed to leave until 4:00 pm. Same reason as above.
I admit I don't have the patience to price many boxes full of stuff. That's another way eBay has spoiled me; I just put the item up for a penny and I never have to price it.

If I tryed selling jewelry at the flea market for a penny, I would still have someone ask me if I would take less but it does work out great for you fluffy on E-Bay and that is the way to go.I'm sure most of it brings more than you expect it to. I took in $613.00 this last weekend at the flea but it was cold and rainy so it was slow. China is priced so high in the stores that anyone finding their pattern on E-Bay would jump on it and save alot of money.

Oh boy, do I ever hear ya there! Yet another thing I don't miss about flea markets.
I was just thinking this morning about the last three or four job interviews I went on before I quit the workforce for good. Horrid, humiliating, condescending, teeth-grinding, oh how I hate interviewing.
And if eBay holds out I will never ever have to do it again. Now there's something to put a smile on my face.

My sales have been going off in the last week as unsold and that is unusual for me. I sell mostly clothing and collectibles. As for right now I have 2 bids out of 9 items. I believe everybody is losing jobs, giving up paychecks, and they aren't spending like they used to due to debt.

Sure are and when and if I get a bid, it is during the last few minutes and the buyer does not always pay either. Think people are holding onto their money and buying only the essentials needed to exist. But then sales in stores ( and I do not mean e-Bay stores ) are also down. Suspect also that debt on credit cards are at an all time high and those who still are employed are worried about the future.

Actually, "fluffythewondercat" *is* one of my eBay IDs. I haven't used it yet.
(Note that I just violated AW rules by referencing an eBay ID....even though it is mine!)
I do nearly all my eBay business under two other seller IDs, both of which are PowerSellers. I have yet another one I use when selling antiques.
