I go to the post office on Mondays and Fridays and try to get there when they open at 7:30 AM. This morning I arrived and there was an elderly lady waiting for the doors to open. Once inside, she handed the clerk two large packages. The clerk then asked her, "How do you want these to go?" To which the lady answered, "The slow way." Of course, I had to giggle. Anyone who deals with the post office on a regular basis like I do knows that unless it is sent Priority or Express, every way is the "slow way." By this time, at least 10 minutes have gone by. She then decides that she wants to purchase 400 stamps for a wedding her daughter is having in May, "In case you run out of them." Needless to say, a trip to the post office that normally takes 10 minutes, took 25 today. I did get a good Friday morning laugh, though.

By June they will probaby raise the rates again and you will have to stand behind her again while she buys 400 1 cents stamps!

Perhaps that elderly lady remembers, as I do, the little metal swinging box inside of her mail box. You would put your letter in the mail box, and 3 pennies in the little box. The mailman would take the 3 cents, and put a stamp on your letter. And, yes, if you put a nickel in, he'd leave you 2 cents change! Ah, yes, gentler times. BTW, I have met and had some nice conversations with folks in today's post office lines. Even met some ebayers.

I remember an elderly lady telling how there use to be both morning and afternoon mail deliveries when she was a young girl.

Mail twice a day? Gee.. I'd be happy to get my mail once a day, 6 days a week. Even happier if it showed up before 7:30pm.
My mail is never here before 5:00pm and we rarely (if ever) get mail on Tuesday and Thursday. We complain, the neighibors complain. Nothing is done.
