Has anybody tried sending end of auction invoices to bidders using an Excel template? Seems like it would be pretty painless and professional but all bidders might not be able to open it or know how. Anybody have any thoughts?

I don't open e-mail attachments, even from friends. There's too much risk of a virus. I also prefer to receive plain text rather than html formatted e-mails.

Same here.
You shouldn't open attachments in general, ESPECIALLY from friends.
*MANY* viruses read your address book and send themselves to the people you regularly correspond with. If you are in their address book, you'll be sent the virus...
Friend's e-mails are therefore the worst offenders!
Now if you mean make the invoice in Excel and save it in an unformatted TEXT file, that would be fine, but it's not much more efficient than a simple text formletter.

People often try to send me attachments created from Microsoft programs. I never open them. I tell 'em to try again, this time in text format.
I don't have Excel, Word or any of the other oh-so-necessary (they said in Redmond) software that PC drones feel compelled to buy.

The most important rule is to keep emails easy to read. Assuming others have the same computer configuration and software as you is asking for unwanted problems, no matter how much work you may think it saves.
Plain text that any browser can read. Period. Trust the voices of experience on that one.
