I had an auction end 5 days ago. The winning bidder is, of course, a Newbie with 4 positives (although only 1 of those show up in his bid history). I have emailed him three times using two separate email carriers to be sure he was able to receive at least one of them. To date, no response whatsoever. On the 4th (the day the auction closed), he did send a request for payment information which I promptly sent. Should I continue to email him maybe warning him of the NPBA that will be filed in a couple of days? I'm at my wits end. This is the first real potential for a non-paying bidder (I know, plenty of them around right now) and I'm not quite sure how to handle it or how long after the auction ends it becomes a real issue.

I've learned more from this board than any manual Ebay could put together! Thanks!

Do not be surprised if the payment just shows up in the mail. Many newbies think that is all that is needed. Reply to his original email explaining that you need some response from him with his shipping address and payment method so that you can have the package ready to ship. You could also request a receipt for the email which will show that he opened it.

Three emails includes the initial WBN notice, the response to his request for payment instructions and my request for a reply for his shipping address and payment preference. Hardly harrassment.

I simply asked for some experienced friendly advise not criticism . That I can get from my mother.

I offer no "request total" features..I personally send this email for 3 consecutive days after the auction has ended.
"Thank you and congratulations! you are the winning bidder of ________. Please forward your complete name and mailing address within 24hrs. and I will get back to you promptly with your total. Thanks again!" Then if I don't hear from them after the 3rd. attempt, I wait one week ( just in case they send some kind of payment... or maybe they are away..or???).
If no contact ( this is going atleast 10 days after the auction ended now)
I do begin the NPB process. I have never had a problem with this procedure. I feel it's really fair for both me and the buyer.

If he sent you a request & you sent what he requested, then you should just sit back and wait for pymt.

This is what I have found successful, especially with Newbies:

First I sent win email. If no response, I send one more with "2nd Email Winner Ebay auction 1223445 - Green Fiesta Plate" - or whatever the auction title is, in the subject.

If still no reply, I state everything in the last email. starting with 3rd email etc in the subject line. In the body of the email I state:

I have not heard from you in regards to your winning my auction. I would appreciate a reply within 72 hours or I may be forced to cancel your bid. Please let me know if there is anything I can do to help you complete this transaction.

Then I attach the original win email to this one as inline text, never as an attachment.

I usually get a reply very quickly. It works really well with new bidders.

I get a lot of buyers that are on the road a lot or only read their email every 5 days.
Also a LOT of people are paranoid about sending their address and will mail out the payment and ignore requests for their address. I never insist on getting their address but politely ask for it so I can prepare a mailing label.
I have a lot of problems with sellers not sending letters after their auctions close or acknowledging payment. I try to send the payment within minutes after the auction closes by PayPal but many sellers do not take the minute ot two to reply that payment was received.
I've decided to no longer bid on items known to weigh under one pound if the s/h isn't stated in the auction. I can no think of a valid reason to not include it. It's $3.85 for Priority Mail anywhere in US and First Class Mail is a uniform rate so why not include it? This is only for very lightweight item auctions. I've found that those that do not include it in their auctions some place tend to be s/h gougers. I got a tiny bubble mailer yesterday with a 49 cent meter on it and that cost me $5 and took 11 days. That was the straw that broke the bidder's back.

Give this person more time. It is quite normal for payment to take up to 14 days to arrive specially in the mail.
Piece of advice is only e-mail the WBN then wait the 14 days. Then if no payment, e-mail again asking when payment will arrive. Then if no response, start the NPB process. Never e-mail after you start the NPB process unless the bidder replies.

The main point is to be more patient and allow the money to come in. You will also have more time to list and sell more auctions making more cash.

"explaining that you need some response from him with his shipping address and payment method so that you can have the package ready to ship..."

BS

Just sit back and wait for the check in the mail.
