1. Is this a legitment eBay site?

I think it is, but someone got this today and they have asked her to update her information. She is only a buyer and now they want her CC#, Drivers license # and bank account #. I told her to email safe harbor and ask if they needed it. With all the scams that are going on she was a little nervous.

When you click that in the email that she recieved it takes you to a page to update your information but the address in the web address section is.

I wonder why they picked on her as in the last months she has only purchased 2 videos and she is the one I wrote about that hasn't received one of them. Oh well, I thought I did the source but evidently I didn't. Thanks all.

besides the fact that there's no encryption and the site isn't secure...

sigh. I wonder how many personal info they got outta that?

talk about major identity theft going on there.

well, I hope they catch the guy before damage is done.

I received one of these yesterday. Poor english grammar is also another red flag. It still amazes me that the secure sites go to great lengths to point out that they will NEVER ask for personal information in this manner, yet everybody continues to buy into it. I really feel sorry for folks who inocently do this. The resulting problems have to be painful.

Libra63, they don't know your friend they just continue to harvest emails any way they can. The people doing this are very evil people and they are preying on the innocence of those who don't want to give up trusting everyone. I hope she has canceled all pertinent cards related to anything she gave them and changed here user ID at Ebay.

The one I got even had a URL to click on if you no longer wish to recieve this, which in itself is interesting because if I am a current Ebay member and they are lagitamately trying to contact me, why would I want to be taken off the list? And of course the provided URL is identical to the other URLs on the page so clicking on any one probably places Spyware on your hard drive and allows them to harvest info when you don't even know it.

How can you tell if it is there?
Do the virus hunters detect it??

Some spyware really isn't spyware; it's trojan-horse type stuff, and an up-to-date antivirus ought to catch it.

If you want to really be sure, though, get Zone Alarm or some other Internet firewall package that will alert you if some piece of software is trying to "get out," as it were.

Finally, for the more prosaic spyware programs, go to lavasoft.com and download ad-aware, and run it regularly to remove spyware.

The way I understand it, "spyware" is a broad term. Theoretically, cookies are "spyware".
These are tiny programs that are "depositied" on your yard drive through other sites that you connect to. Once there they can commuicate with the site that put them there and the information they send is only limited to how elaborite the "spyware" is. I have heard that some can, for instance, harvest all the email addresses on your hard drive and send them to the site that created the "spyware". Some monitor your internet activity and let third parties know this info so they know what type of spam to send you. Truely evil Spyare would harvest your Identity i. e. CC numbers, SS number, and of course Passwords.

All you have to do to get these spyware programs place on your HD is to connect to the offending site probably for less than thirty seconds. The most elaborite of spyware would continue to send information to the host site any time you were on line. Usually, the way I understand it is you click on the site, it immediately sends the spyware which, once it is on you drive immediately harvests the info and sends it right back to the intruding computer. once you log off that site the deed is done, but in the case of passwords etc. it could be devestating.

I am no expert and I just noticed cdheer responded with some good info so I hope this helps define the problem from a feeble minded layman's perspective
