It's on the tip of my tongue and I just can't get it out...
Remember back in the "old days" (lol) when women would hang their quilts on the line and beat them with a tool specially made for that? What is that thingy called??? I have tried "quilt beater" and "quilt wand" and get no results.
I would appreciate any help on this!

Hi,
Try "carpet beater." They were used for that, too.

toolhound is right, they are Rug Beaters, they predate carpets.

Well, carpet is a pretty old word too. Its use predates the modern wall-to-wall shag or Berber floor covering as we know it. (And aren't we all happy shag carpet is no longer in vogue.)
Remember "carpetbaggers"? Post Civil War era speculators from the North?

Thanks Fluffy ... I just had a thought - have you ever seen a flooring ad for "wall-to-wall rugging?"

I remember a apartment I once lived in. Red shag carpet. Back when my wife want me to wear bellbottom jeans & platform suede shoes.
harvest gold colored appliances, fondue pots & waiting in line to buy gas.

Well, back in the old days it was known as a carpet beater. Heck, I have even used one, we didn't have one of those new fangled electric vacuums, we didn't even have electricity until I was 10 or 11 & the REA came through. I was just a "po Iowa farm boy"
