At the suggestion of several people on here i downloaded the program..now..HOW DO I COMPRESS MY IMAGES? I feel so dumb! I tried to "save as" jpg2000...at first it didn't work (said my image was too large) so I paid for a license and downloaded something else (beats me what it was)...now I did the save as thing again and it worked only now WindowsXP doesnt know how to open the image and when i tried to upload to AW they wouldn't accept it (the image had .jpg2 extension)..thanks in advance!

I have to go out for awhile but click Help in your IrfanView, then IrfanView Help, then Index.
Then click Index, Resize and display.
Also Save Options and then display.
It explains it all there and they do it much better than I can attempt to. Good luck with it.

Now i really feel dumb! I checked out the "help" but how do I know what to resize image to? And assuming size "as is" is ok how to I compress the image so that folks viewing my auctions won't have such a long time to wait on the upload? (I think that is what i want to do with IrFan isn't it?)..and if the answer is "save as .jpg2" how do I get my Windows XP to recognize it and AW to accept on the upload? Thanks for the help Kiara !

Not what you asked for, but you might want to check out spinwave.com They have a jpg/gif cruncher that is awesome and easy to use. I believe they offer both an online service as well as desktop software.

FIRST: RESIZE to whatever you prefer! I try to keep my images < than 400 X 400.
THEN: you have to SAVE AS this image -- i-view will save it in just about format you like...JUST CHOOSE "jpg" from the drop-down menu! When you bring up the SAVE AS box, there is an "OPTIONS" button -- hit that & open-up OPTIONS!
There is a slider bar -- adjust it! The closer to 100% you move it, the LESS compression, but the larger the file..& vice versa! I try to keep images < than 40kb for quick loading!

I wasn't sure how to compress my images so i tried to convert to "JPG2000" and when i did that it said that I would have to purchase a license to use JPG2000 for images the size i requested, so i clicked the link and gave my credit card #.....they said they would send my license number within a day or two...it hasn't come..have i been had? I DONT REMEMBER WHO IT WAS TO!!!!!!

I have know idea who or what JPG2000 is...sounds like some kind of proprietory pic format or advanced editing commercial plug-in.
FWIW: you do not need! Probably a plug-in for advanced effects. Just contact your CC & explain.
IrfanView is a pretty powerful program that tries to satify the requirements of many users. All the features that anybody needs are free.

The Irfan View program is a freeware. It is one of the best.
IrfanView website: Click here: IrfanView]=http://www.irfanview.com/] Click here: IrfanView
States:
If you are a commercial user and you like this program (or are a home user who wants to support/donate further development), please register/donate by sending US$ 10.00 or EUR 10,- (this is the price for one (single) licence) to the address below. Please send cash only. (I cannot accept credit cards or check cashing fees at the bank.)
Here is information on JPG2000 or more correctly JPEG200. Here is their website: Click here: LeadTools: JPG2000]=http://www.leadtools.com/sdk/raster/raster-addon-jpeg2000.htm] Click here: LeadTools: JPG2000
JPEG2000 Overview
JPEG2000 is a new image-encoding standard that provides a feature set vital to many high end and emerging imaging applications. JPEG2000 provides high compression with image quality superior to all existing standard encoding techniques. This high compression and quality performance is due to the adaptation of wavelet transforms. Wavelet transforms are mathematical formulas that represent complex structures in the image, thereby compressing an extremely large amount of image data into a relatively small amount of compressed data. This compression technique allows applications to save compressed images with higher compression ratios and better image quality as compared to any other software currently in production.
Most of my images are 450 X 250 and I always make sure that they are 350K, since AW will not accept larger images than 350K. AW is only set up to accept JPG & JPEG images, it does not support JPEG2000 or JPG2000 technology yet.
If you are going to use AW, You can also try a compression utility such as http://www.jpegcruncher.com (freeware) or the Jpeg Optimizer available for download at http://www.downloads.com Jpeg Optimizer is not free.
Hope that helps

I use the resize to % feature on Irfanview. Usually 75 to 80% works for me.
That way, it holds the quality which I keep at 100% but just make the photo a little smaller. That after croping away any unwanted edge.

Set up (resize) your image then select "Save As" from the File menu. Select JPG, *NOT* JP2 (JPG2000). In the Save As dialog box, click on Options, then click on the JPG/GIF tab. Adjust the slider bar to set compression. (The default setting of 80 works great.)

I have found this to be a really nice program, and was happy to have found it mentioned on the 'boards' here, and vouched for.
One thing however, and it is probably my ineptness; is there something in that program to be able to write or annotate on images, such as 'copywrite' or 'property of', and the like.
Thanks irfanview experts.

If you're feeling adventurous, check out GIMP (GNU Image Manipulation Program). It's distributed under GPL, so (unlike IrfanView) it is free even for commercial use.
This is a real hefty photo editor, not a viewer like IrfanView. It can do everything (layers, channels, etc.) but not for the faint of heart.
