Ebay just gave my contact info out to a person who just registered yesterday and is second high bidder on one of my auctions. I thought contact info was only sent out to high bidders of a completed auction!!! When did this change??

http://pages.ebay.com/help/welcome/contact_information.html

Bidders can request contact information for a seller during an active listing and in a closed listing that they've won.

What are you afraid of?? If I were a bidder, I would like to know more about the seller. I have been on for over 6 yrs. & I welcome any inquiries.

Sanmar - so you make a practice of finding out the phone number every person whos items you bid on?

Anne - It's just me but that spells a rather disturbing amount of mania to me and if I had a bidder that did that I would cancel their bid and block them. I very rarely block bidders but I would deem that one a headache waiting to happen.

If it's really "common" sense, why do so few people actually have it?

Hi all,

The newbie is probably just nervous or maybe thinks that's the way people do when they bid on eBay. I wouldn't worry about it.

I wouldn't worry either. Unless they showed up in my email over and over or they phoned me ........ or if there was a knock on the door and they were standing there.

I once had a newbie pull my contact info as soon as the auction ended. I sent him a wbn and explained that all end of auction business should be handled by email so we could both print a hard copy of name's, addresses, etc and not have to rely on scribbled notes. I'm glad he pulled my info though. When I got the cc email from Ebay with my contact info, I discovered that I had failed to update it when my area code was changed by Pacific Bell a year earlier and that I had invalid contact info on file with them. Needless to say, I jumped right in and updated my contact info on both my accounts and emailed the bidder with the correct telephone number. I could just imagine him trying to call me on the outdated number and reporting me to Ebay when the call wouldn't go through.

The ebay shopping expierence can be overwhelming to a true newbie and they can easily get lost and find the contact info section and use that to try to contact the seller.

Hi again. I guess I WAS a bit nervous because 2 minutes before I received the contact info email, I had received an email from this person that DID make me a bit apprehensive. In VERY bad English, the bidder questioned my honesty and if I can be trusted after he had placed his bid. He said he lived in CA and am I able to ship there. I emailed him back and assured him I was an honest person and to check my feedback..just under 2000...3 long ago negs..not one neg about taking money and not delivering.
This was when I received the contact info email from ebay. The info gave NY ( MY state) as his address when he had said CA. It made me think that THIS person was not all that honest..after all, he had just registered that day and already his contact info was incorrect. I didn't have to cancel his bid because he wasn't a high bidder, but I DID put him on my BB list.
I have had problems with deadbeats lately and just left 8 negs for one person. I just felt uncomfortable in the fact that a person only has to register..BID on someones auctions and ebay will give them my phone number.

This is exactly why I use a P O Box for my Ebay transactions. Not too long after I started selling, I had my info pulled (home address) after listing a couple of expensive used laptops. Made me VERY nervous as to the motive of that person and I "wised" up really fast to the wide variety of people using Ebay.

Get used to the newbie stuff. eBay has gone into the same mode as the cigarette companies. They need XXXX number of new customers each day to replace the customers that 'die'.
Lol, have ya all seen the anti-smoking commercial comparing the marketing methods of the tobacco companies to that of 'shards of glass popsicles'? Whenever I see an anti-smoking ad I try to find the way it would be analagous to eBay. Try it, you'll like it.
