I know this is a subject that we've discussed before. I'm against it 99.9% of the time. But I've had an interesting situation come up. I listed a widget that I literally found at the bottom of a bag of junk. I know a little bit about the field and thought it was worth $50. I start the auction and within 12 hours someone offers $500 if I end the auction. Someone else contacts me and while they're not interested in buying, says it should bring $1000-2000. I show the item today to a friend who's VERY knowledgable in the field and he says it's worth 200-300, but it's the type of rarity that could bring 1000+ if the right people happen to be looking this week. Could bring 150 if they're not looking. So, what would you do? Should I gamble, or end the auction?

If there are no bids add a reserve or a BIN.

As the nifty tattoo on Ralphie's cute little doggy butt says: "Take the money and RUN!"

CNBC: "Unless the economy adds at least 2.3 million jobs by the end of the year, Bush will go down as the first president since Hoover to preside over a four-year term in which total employment fell."

I happen to have set a reserve on this one....usually don't do reserves. It was $50. The bidding stands at $60 right now after 3 days.

not gonna share huh?

I'm in agreement will Ralphie. I'm not usually.

But $500 is $500! that's a lot of FVF's!!

I'm assuming the buyer has good FB?

You could cancel bids and redo.
Or you could cancel auction and redo.
I would tell the person to bid 500.00.

You'll have to decide this one on your gut feeling.

I don't like selling off Ebay unless it's out of store.

I told the person to bid 500. He gave me the old bs about not being around when the auction ends. Told him I didn't have a problem with that. Told him to place a proxy bid and if he won I'd wait till he returns. Probably bs...he's a dealer in the field. Hit the right buttons though. Told me about how he's made offers like this in the past, and when the auction ends at a lower price, he won't pay 500. He won't bid. He has great feedback with lots of sales and lots of bids.

You could cancel bids and the auction, Relist with FP and send the person who wants to pay $500 the link to the new listing..stay eBay kosher!

I have listed several auctions where buyers have offered me a certain price and asked me to end the auction early (I sell collectibles). I tell them it is against my policy to end my auctions early and I have always ended up getting more for the items than I have been offered. Someone offered me $50 for a beer can and I ended up getting close to $500. Another offered me $1200 for a doll and I got $1900. At least for me, it's paid to "let it ride."

When the bidder offered $500 I suppose he meant an off ebay deal. I must be in the minority but I'd jump on that in a heartbeat. The bidder is taking all the risk.

Update......I decided in the end to take my chances and play the game the right way. No ending auctions early. No off-Ebay deals. After 9 1/2 days the bidding stood at $70 with the $500 offer still there. I let the auction run it's course and it sold for $570. Moral of the story....never...never....ever....end an auction early.

If the $500.00 is legit, then I would end the auction & take the cash. Helz what did you expect to get from this??

I had one of these last week - by the time I read his email there were eight bidders that had left his offer in the dust. And as usual, I noticed this person is not one of the bidders.

I would simply say, money talks. You get me the $500.00 and I will end the auction. Not a second sooner.
