Question. I have the vintage Army jacket up for auction this week and a knowledgeble collector emailed me with some information about it. He gave me a link to his website http://www.mountaintroops.us/ I see he has a "Seen on Ebay" section.

Is it legal to lift auction photos and descriptions and post on your website? I haven't a clue if he asked permission or not, I'm just wondering. ok, maybe I should ask..."is it ethical?" Legal is a broad term I know.

Here's one of those instances where too many words can bite you in the a** I guess, from people like this collector. rare, genuine, mint.

I may end up end in his Ebay hall of fame

He hasn't lifted anything, just posting a link...

Seems reasonable to let collectors know that these are not what they seem

Only people interested in those items would see that page

Glassgirl, I happened upon a webpage when researching some army pins at one time.
The guy said right on the page he lifted the images from ebay auctions.

I dont know if its illegal either, but it is definitely unethical - but how much anyone really cares until they find out and even then, I dont know?

no, if you click on the link it shows the auction verbatim, pictures etc. Guess he uses "saved as html page" to his desktop.

I did address it when I responded to his email.

"You have an interesting website. Your "Seen on Ebay" section leads me to wonder if you have permission from the sellers of those items to post their auction photos and descriptions. I'm sure this is a gray area in legalese, maybe I'm just thinking ethically and morally, it just makes me feel a little funny to view their auction items and then to read where you disagree. "

In his email(to me) and website he (somewhat) objects to people using words that aren't qualified to the object. I used the words Mountain Troops in my description when I said that is what I googled up. I didn't say it was a Mountain Troop item.

I told him I guess I could of just listed it as "Possible Army Vintage Fuzzy Pile Liner" and hoped for the best.

I see what you mean, looked like links to eBay,

I still don't see a problem as he is "educating" people who collect those items, he is not selling anything or using those pictures or descriptions for anything other than education.
