Has anyone received a 2002 Survey of Business Owners and Self Employed Persons from the US Census Bureau?

I've never seen this before, and find it a bit concerning since the envelope reads, "YOUR RESPONSE IS REQUIRED BY LAW". I was unaware something like this is required, and when I asked some other friends who own businesses, they haven't received anything.

I have not seen one of those in several years. Have they added any wording that requires the information to be true? It used to be you could fill in anything you wanted on those things.

yes, get this...

if you don't answer the census you can be fined no more than $500, but if you give any false info, you can be fined up to $10,000.

We have been self employed insurance inspectors for 25+ years and have never received one.

Here is a link that may help. It appears to be the survey you have.

Did you get this because of Ebay?

During 2002 my only self employment was via Ebay. I also worked for an attorney for most of 2002, but was laid off in September. I did Ebay mostly part time (average of 5 hours a week), and I think I may have made a profit of $1000 through that year after all of my expenses.

I did some investigation work and think they are focusing on people of Hispanic origin. Figures...

I think what bugs me is the way it is presented. They are forcing us to participate in something by threating legal action. Yet, not all self-employed people are part of this census.

I was under the impression that a census was based on an entire population. According to the bureau, they conduct this census every 5 years. Shouldn't that mean that every small business or self-employed business has to participate?

It think it reaks of racism and fascism all in one.

I don't know Rusty - could be that he government is just flat out lying to us again but this is what the CD is saying this survey is about.

We will release 7 publications on a flow basis: American Indians and Alaska Natives; Asians, Native Hawaiians and Other Pacific Islanders; Blacks or African Americans; Hispanics; Minority Business Enterprise Summary; Women Business Enterprises; and a Company Summary. Data will be available via the Internet, on CD-ROM, and printed reports. Additional HTML tables will be available to allow for customized searches by industry and geographic location.

Uses:

SBO statistics are used routinely by government program officials, industry organization leaders, economic and social analysts, and business entrepreneurs. Examples of data use include those by:

The Small Business Administration (SBA) and the Minority Business Development Agency (MBDA) to assess business assistance needs and allocate available program resources.

Local government commissions on small and disadvantaged businesses to establish and evaluate contract procurement practices.

Federal, state and local government agencies as a framework for planning, directing and assessing programs that promote the activities of disadvantaged groups.

A national women-owned business trade association to assess women-owned businesses by industry and area, and educate other industry associations, corporations and government entities.

Consultants and researchers to analyze long-term economic and demographic shifts, and differences in ownership and performance among geographic areas.

Individual business owners to analyze their operations in comparison to similar firms, compute their market share, and assess their growth and future prospects.

If it's really "common" sense, why do so few people actually have it?
