For those of you who never leave feedback first I have a question.
I just received an email from a buyer who stated:
If you will post positive feedback for my prompt payment, then I will be happy to do the same for item received today.
So what do you do?
I used to post feedback at the time I received payment. But, since the auction service I use will download feedback received it is just easy to go in and check it and post then. I don't really have a problem with posting this guys feedback first, I just wondered what you die hards who never ever post first would say to him?
I stopped posting first because I only receive feedback on about 1/3 of my sales. I didn't want to beg for it, but I got tired of leaving it for those who just don't bother to do the same.

This could start another lonnnng thread, Lindajean, about when to post feedback. At the risk of starting an argument here, I'll still tell you that I post feedback when I get the money--and I've never been stung--yet. There will probably be a first time, but, for me, it's just simpler to do feedback this way.
That said, I'd be leery of that buyer's request that you post first. Worst case, he could be planning to leave a neg and doesn't want a retaliatory neg from you. In this case, I do think I'd just e-mail and tell him I conscientiously post feedback after the buyer does and I would hope he'd be agreeable to that. If not, Lindajean, just let it go. He doesn't get feedback, you don't get feedback, bada bing, bada boom. ~Adele

What I usually say is that I leave feedback once feedback is left for me so that I know their item arrived safely and they are happy with it. I also go on to say that if they are unhappy, they should contact me prior to leaving feedback so we can try to resolve any issues. Usually works for me.

I try to head them off at the pass
Each "SHIPPED" email has this blurb:
"Auctions should be fun! If you have any questions about your purchase after it arrives, PLEASE contact me! I check my feedback profile at least once/day and reciprocate immediately. I'm very grateful for all the kind comments over the past 3 years"
& then a link to FEEDBACK for the item.
Very few ask for feedback & most leave it after receiving their goodies -- I'm religious in reciprocating that day.
OTOH: after ya get that RED STAR, the pressure for FB sure do DECREASETH!

You got that right tom!! 1200 w/o neg - knocking wood here!!!
Here's what I would do - I would write them back and say "Then I take it that you have received your item and that you are pleased?"
If they say the are pleased etc I'd just go ahead and leave it for them. Then if they were to leave you negative, I think you would have a good shot at having it remove.
They sound like they are just new and in need of FB

Linda - I have stated in my thank you note that goes out upon shopment that my system is set up to automatically leave reciprocal feedbck when it is left for me. I also let them know that if the have recieved their item aand all is well but they would like for me to leave feedback first to just let me know and I will happily oblige.

If it's really "common" sense, why do so few people actually have it?
I didn't want to stir up trouble, but I stopped leaving feedback first when I was hit with 3 bounced checks all in one week and only one of the three ever paid.
While I'm not losing sleep over the lost $$ (not much money anyway) but, I do hate that I left them positive feedback! So, I decided to try out waiting.
I do offer a money back guarantee and state so in my shipped email. So, there isn't any problems there.
And, it is very easy to check for feedback left and then leave feedback for everyone who posted for me at the end of each day. One click of a button and Auction Sage will run through my list of 25 feedback comments and leave different feedback to everyone I have selected.
I will try the approach about asking if he is happy with the item. The way he worded it just made me a little nervous.
Yes, after the red star it does seem like the desire for feedback would wane, but not so. I want to get rid of red...it never was my favorite color

Tomwiii--I REALLY like your feedback statement. Would you mind if a few of your best friends here borrowed it (changing a few words here and there to avoid a plagiarism suit)?! I may start using it if and when I decide not to leave feedback first (that is, when the fates finally hand me a doozy and I learn my lesson).~Adele

Here's what I put in the here's your purchase letter I send with the item:
"... I hope you’re pleased! I’d appreciate knowing it has arrived safely so I can leave feedback.
A pleasant comment from you would be most welcome, assuming all’s well with your purchase. If not please let me know right away! ..."
Seems like I'm hearing from more since I started doing this. Some email their whatever has arrived and they've left feedback for me. Others just leave the feedback. Maybe it's because it's all spelled out that I'll leave feedback AFTER I hear from them.
Edited to add: In Lindajean's case I would try to find out if he's pleased with his purchase. Then I'd leave the feedback. I don't always wait for the feedback, just until I know they're happy.

I say nothing about feedback.
I don't sell feedback.
I don't discuss feedback with buyers or sellers.
I leave feedback for 99% of my transactions, just not upon shipping or receiving payment.
People who want to be included with the 1% that doesn't get feedback, should bug me about it.
If people leave feedback, I'll return it at the end of the week.
Otherwise I'll leave feedback at the end of the current month or maybe the end of next month.

I have found the best way for me is to state in the email sent to the buyer when item is shipped is-
"Thank you for your business. I sincerely hope you enjoy your item and will reflect your pleasure by leaving feedback for me. As soon as I'm aware that the item has been received and the transaction is complete, either by receiving your feedback or hearing from you via email I will post feedback for you.
Thanks Again"
Most leave feedback when the item is in their hands. Some (very few) send me an email letting me know they got the item and are happy. At this point I leave them feedback whether they have left it for me or not.
I'm too busy to get into a "you leave it first - no, you leave it first" battle. It's not worth my time.
Some buyers never leave fb, for whatever reason. If they don't, then they don't. I'm not going to chase them or worry about it.
